"Water.—To the eastward of Mew island, on the Java shore^ there-is<br />

a good watering place in the south-east monsoon; the water is excellent,<br />

and is poured by a cataract upon the beaich. . Large boats may approach<br />

this spot at high water through a narrow channel in the reef, and fill the<br />

casks by a hose ; at low water they will require.a great length of hose to<br />

reach the boats.<br />

A little to -the northward, i of the watering place, and about half a mile<br />

from the Java shore, lies a coral reef about, a cable, in extent, i tUpon its<br />

shoalest part there is one fathom water, and; all round from 5 to 6 fathoms^<br />

A vessel standing in for the watering place, must steer between this. reef<br />

and the island, and anchor in 9 or 10 fathoms. , . , .<br />

In the south-east monsoon there is also a good anchorage a little farther<br />

out, with the north point of Mew island bearing about W. ^ S.,,and the<br />

east point S. by.W., in 16 to 19 fathoms water, sandy bottom. „ •<br />

Plenty of wood maybe obtained from Mew island or. the main land.<br />

Tides.— lit is high water, full and change, at Mew bay at about - 6h.,<br />
