as directed, 5 or 4^ fathoms will be found for about half the distance to<br />

the entrance of the channel between Sor^ and Basing islands, when the<br />

depth will increase to 8, 10, and 16 fathoms.<br />

<strong>The</strong> northern Topic bearing S. bj E. | E. will lead through in mid-<br />

channel between the shoals extending from Sor6 island, and Pulo Dompa,<br />

marked by buoys ; this latter bank is steep-to, while that on the Sore side<br />

shoals gradually. Having passed Tanjong Dompa, vessels may steer about<br />

North for Rhio road, with the whole of Loz island open of the west<br />

extreme of Pitjingit, See anchorage at page 423.<br />

Vessels of moderate draft being on the western side of the strait, about<br />

une mile eastward of Little Garras, should steer N. by E. or N.N.E. accord^<br />

ing to circumstances, to pass between Rotterdam reef and Dutch shoal,<br />

crossing the bank with 3 J to 4 fathoms water lying between them ; thence<br />

through the channel between Sore and and Dompa islands, to the roadstead<br />

as before directed.<br />

To Rhio from the Northward.—Having entered Rhio strait,<br />

iis directed at page 431, and reached a position about one mile to the west-<br />

ward of Loban Kechil, a south-easterly course should be steered, keeping'<br />

Sau lighthouse just open of Loban Kechil until Terkolei lighthouse bears<br />

E. \ N,, when an E. by S. course will lead about midway between Terkolei<br />

and Sore reef buoys, to the anchorage in the road.<br />
