<strong>The</strong>se reefs are all steep-to aud must be carefully avoided.<br />

Directions.—Anchorage.—Approaching Tyingkok bay from the<br />

northward, vessels may pass on either side of !N'iaraok, thence steering for<br />

Pulo Kombang to avoid the shoals south-eastward of Niamok.<br />

Between Pulo Kombang and Ayer Besar, the depths are from 16 to 25<br />

fathoms. From between these islands the flagstaff of Pulo Tyingkok<br />

(Painam) or Chenco may be seen upon a round hill to the north-eastward,<br />

and which should be steered for, passing south of the Semankie group,<br />

and anchor off Pulo Tyingkok in 12 fathoms.<br />

Painam harbour lies eastward of Pulo Tyingkok, with a depth<br />

in the channel south of the island of 9 and 10 fathoms, and from 4 to 7<br />

fathoms in the harbour. Painam is a place of considerable trade, and has<br />

a wharf for the convenience of lading and unlading goods.<br />

COAST. —Batuwang bay and Telok Kersik, are two<br />

small bays lying southward of Tyingkok bay. Both afford good anchorage<br />

in moderate depths, but open to westerly winds. About 6 miles south-east-<br />

ward is situated Batang Kapas bay, having also good anchorage ground,<br />

but open to S.W. winds.<br />

Off-lying Islets.—<strong>The</strong> islets and reefs lying between Pulo Panyu<br />

and Ujong Indrapuru, from 5 to 15 miles off the coast, will now be<br />

described.<br />

Pulo Ayer Karaba Kechil, lies 9 miles south-eastward of Pulo<br />

Panyu, and 5 miles from Ujong Radya on the main. Two miles northward<br />

of Ujong Kadya, and one mile off shore lie some rocks, dry at low water.<br />

Pulo Ayer Karaba Besar is 4 miles south-westward of Karaba<br />

Kechil. A shoal lies W.N.W. 2^ miles from Karaba Besar and there is<br />

said to be another about 1^ miles to the southward.<br />

Pulo Kersik or Sandy island lies south-eastward about 7 miles from<br />

Pulo Ayer Karaba Besar. Within a distance of 6 miles of Pulo Kersik,<br />

and between the bearings ofW.S.W. and S.S.W., there is a cluster of<br />

.shoals, some of which break occasionally.<br />

Pulo Katang Katang, or Tree island, bears nearly South, distant<br />

10^ miles from Pulo Kersik, and is nearly 15 miles off shore. A sandbank<br />

lies E.N.E. distant 3 miles from it.<br />

Pulo Baringin, the southernmost of the chain of islands in this<br />

locality, lies 4 miles E. f S. from Pulo Katang Katang.<br />

A shoal lies 1^ miles S. by W. ^ W. distant 1^ miles from Baringin;<br />

and another at 4 miles South from the same islet.<br />

Karang Semedang<br />

is a reef 3 miles off the coast, with mount<br />

Linga bearing E. by S. distant 6 miles, and on which the sea breaks in bad<br />

weather. Between the distances of 2^ and 5 miles N.W. by N. from
