OUTER CHANNEL.^Islets and Dangers on South<br />

side.—<strong>The</strong> dailgfersiforming the south side of Outer channel, as far eastward<br />

as Little Kombuis, are those described as forming the north side<br />

of- Inner channelj'the description of the south side dangers are continued<br />

from that island eastward.<br />

LekapO reef is the north-west patch of a group of isolated reefs covering<br />

a«pace of about' 2 miles squa,r6, lying north-westward of Middleburg<br />

island. It is a small corai patch with 2| fathoms water, at If miles E. JNof<br />

Little Kombuis.<br />

Sau reef, half 'a cable in extent with 4 fathoms water, lies 1^ miles<br />

north-eastward of Lekapo reef, between and southward of which are<br />

Bubara and Kotak reefs, with 2^ and 3 fathoms over them. Udyung<br />

patches of 4f fathoms, at 3 and 3^ cables north-eastward of Sau reef,<br />

lie in, or on the south side of Outer channel, and must be avoided by<br />

heavy draught vessels. Here, Outer channel is but one mile wide. .<br />

South-eastward of Sau reef shoal patches will be found for a distance of<br />

1 J miles ; Makiam patch of 7 fathoms lies at that distance, and the ground<br />

to the westward and between it and Middleburg island, is all foul and must<br />

be avoided.<br />

Buoys.—White beacon buoys mark the north edges of Lekapo and<br />

Sau reefs, forming the south side of Outer channel.<br />

Dapur island is a narrow islet about 260 yards in length, lying<br />

between the northern and western approaches to Batavia road, at about 3^<br />

miles north-eastward of Middleburg island. It is covered with bushes<br />

amongst which stands a tall tree, and encircled by a coral reef which in<br />

places extends nearly one cable. Tanda reef is a small coral patch with 2<br />

fathoms of water, situated 1-| cables eastward of the island.<br />

Tlie GuSOngS are three detached reefs, 3 cables in extent, with a<br />

least depth of 1^ fathoms, lying about 4 cables north-eastward of Dapur<br />

island. A white buoy marks the north side of the Grusongs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> continuation of Outer channel, eastward of Sau reefs, is northward<br />

of Dapur island and of this buoy, the channel westward of Dapur island<br />

being named the Middle channel.<br />

Middle grounds.—Buoys.—Outer channel, between Kombuis<br />

islands and the Agenieten islands is divided into two branches ; the<br />

southern one running along the north side of Kombuis island and Lekapo<br />

and Sau reef, and the northern one running close southward of the Agenieten<br />

islands. Between these channels isolated patches extend 4 miles in an east<br />

and west directiop, 2 miles north and south, and may be termed the middle<br />

grounds.<br />

Delima reef, at the western extreme of this group, is half a cable<br />

in extent, with a depth of 2^ fathoms, and 18 to 20 fathoms close to. A<br />
