' <strong>The</strong> Three Kuting Dyambu (Jambu) islets and many rocks lie off the<br />

north point of the river. Two miles westward of theni there is anchorage<br />

^n 4 fathoms, sand.<br />

Directions.—Steer in with the south point of the river entrance<br />

bearing East, and when reaching the bar a more northerly course may be<br />

made for the middle of the river, where the channel between the banks<br />

extending from the entrance points is more distinguishable.<br />

Tide.—Spring tides rise about 5 feet, neaps 2^ feet.<br />

Mount Eedio, or high peak 1,70? feet above the sea, is the sijmiQ^t<br />

of a range extending in a south-westerly direction westward of Kenda-<br />

wangan river. Mount Minto stands on Minto point, north-westward of<br />

Kedio, and is visible about 20 miles in clear weather.<br />

GaSiii point, at 6 mUes northward of Kendawangan river, is high<br />

and rocky ; reefs extend seaward about 3 cables, also in a S.S.E. diree-<br />

tion for one mile. Northward of the point the coast is low and wooded<br />

as far as Minto point, and intersected with streams of fresh water.<br />

SEWi isla>nd is, low, 6 cables in extent, and situated 7 miles<br />

southward of Minto point, at 5 miles off shore. <strong>The</strong> tops of the trees are<br />

visible from a distance of 12 miles, and islets lie about 2 cables off its east<br />

and west points.<br />

Foul ground extends from Sawi island, half way to the shore, render-<br />

ing the inshore channel unsafe.<br />

A reef (Onrust), dry about 2 feet at low water, and half a mile in<br />

extent, lies with Menkudu rocks bearing N. f E. ; Sawi island S.E. by E. ^ E.<br />

distant 6 miles, and Mount Kedio E. ^ S.<br />

Tokong Menkudu or Gilbert rock, is 33 feet high having two<br />

trees upon it, and sparsely covered with vegetation. Reefs extend; from<br />

the rock in all directions, on the south side for nearly half a mUe, having<br />

from 5 to 9 fathoms close to the,-edges.<br />

A reefj' nearly dry at low water, lies nearly 2 miles N.W.of Miito<br />

point. ;<br />

Pesaguan river.—Tire entrance to Pesaguan river is situated in<br />

a bight of the coastywhere the'sbores are low and densely wooded, 12 miles<br />

northwai'd of mount Minto. <strong>The</strong> river is about half a cable wide, has 3<br />

feet water over the bar atlow tide, with from, 2 to 3 fathoms water within.<br />

Between Minto point and Ketapang river the ground /is foul within the<br />

PAWAN IlIVER.-^This river divides into two arms at a distance<br />

of about' 12 miles &oM thecoast, the southern arm is named Eetapang and<br />

the northern arm Karbau. When approaching this river ;from the' west-
