Twp small; islets lie northward of Meteidong, from the 'western of which<br />

a re^f extends West one cable, having a rock over which breakers are<br />

usually seen.<br />

<strong>The</strong> three islands of the western group lie in a north and south direction<br />

about half a mUe apart ; from the nonhern of these a reef extends west- -<br />

ward 4| cables, and from the southern island a reef extends about 3 cables<br />

to the southward.<br />

Rob Roy rock.—This small rock with a depth of 15 feet, lies in<br />

Falpan channel, with the south extreme of Mieleidong island bearing<br />

S.E. ^ E. distant one mile.<br />

'Eate (AtLCkland) rock, about one mile westward of Eob Eoy<br />

rock, a 1^ cables in extent, with 7 feet water, and 12 to 14 fathoms] sand<br />

and mud, around. Its position is usually indicated by a ripple.<br />

GURONG or PASSAGE ISLANDS are two thicklywooded<br />

rocky islets situated about 10 miles north-westward of Papan<br />

islands. , <strong>The</strong>y stand on a coral reef which fringes the islands for a short<br />

distance, having from 12 to 14 fathoms close to.<br />

A rock about 160 yards in extent with 7 feet water, and 12 to 14<br />

fathoms around, lies with East Gurong bearing W. by N. J N. distant half<br />

...Tallack reef, a small coral reef about 160 yards in extent, with<br />

2 fathoms water, and from 18 to 20 fathoms close around, lies with East<br />

Gurong .island, bearing E. by S. f S., distant 5| miles.<br />

PELAPI (Melapies) ISLANDS, situated 7 miles north-west-<br />

ward of the Grurong islands, consists of four high rocky islands ; the south-<br />

eastisrniaSd highest, attains an elevation of 1,180 feet.<br />

'Aneihorage.—During the easterly monsoon there is good anchorage<br />

in from 8 to 9 fathoms, mud, midway between the two northern islands;<br />

there is also a navigable channel between the north-west and south-west<br />

islands, but the other channels should not be used. South-east of the group<br />

is an extensive mud flat, affording safe anchorage in 7 fathoms, during the<br />

westerly monsoon. A reef extends 2 cables from the north-east island<br />

towards the anchorage.<br />

Double island, situated one mile eastward of the north-east Pelapi<br />

island is 403 feet high, and appears as two islands when seen from a<br />

feet high, with a safe passage of 15 fathoms water between it and Pene-<br />

bangan.
