Rotterdam island (Ubi Besar) isil^ cables, in lengtb, and<br />

covered with trees; a coral reef, surrounds theisland.and extends in, places<br />

to the distance of one cable, with 9 to 10 fathoms close-to,<br />

Ubi reefr or rock, with' a depth lof 2 fathoms, lies East, distant 2|;<br />

cables froni the east point of Eotterdam island. On its north-east side is a<br />

white beacon buoy, marking, the west side of Middle channel. •<br />

A reef, about 2^ cables in extent, with a least depth of 1 ^l- feet,' lies<br />

about 3 cables S.S.E. ^ E.- of Eotterdam island. Detached- pajtches lie<br />

close off its east and west extremes. A similar patch with 1-| fathoms least<br />

water, and steep*to, lies nearly midway between Rotterdam and Kerkhof<br />

islands, with the former bearing N.W. -^ N., and the latter S. by W,'^ W.<br />

detached rocks lie off its north-east and west sides.<br />

A patch of 2 j. fathoms lies with Kerkhof island, bearing S. f E., distant<br />

5^ cables.<br />

-Kerkhof island (Kelor) lies l^ miles southward of Rotterdam.<br />

It is about one cable in extent, covered with trees, and has a stone tower<br />

onits north-west extreme. <strong>The</strong> island stands on the western edge of a<br />

reef which extends nearly 2 cables northward and eastward of it. A_patch-<br />

of 3 fathoms lies S.W. by W. J W. about 3 cables from the middle of the<br />

west side of the islet, and- a small patch of one fathom lies nearly 3 cables<br />

southof the north-west extreme of it',<br />

Tengnagel rock, of small extent, with a depth of 3 fathoms, and 7<br />

fathoms close-to, lies with the masting crane at Onrust bearing S. f E.,<br />

and Mathilde rock S.W.<br />

Stone of Onrust, a small coral reef of 2^ fathoms, and 5 fathoms,<br />

mud, around it, lies with the north-west point of Onrust bearing S.E. by S.<br />

about 4 cables ; a black beacon buoy marks its west side. Between the<br />

stone of Onrust and Kerkhof island are several isolated patches.<br />

Mathilde rock (Karang Perut) a small patch of 2 fathoms,<br />

lies 4^ cables W. ^ N. from the stone of Onrust, and nearly 2 cables off<br />

the edge of the shore mud bank. A white buoy marks its north side in 3<br />

fathoms. Inner channel is between this buoy and the black buoy marking<br />

the stone of Onrust.<br />

Onrust island (Pulo Kapal) on the western side of the bay, is about<br />

400 yards in extent ; on the north and east sides a reef extends to the<br />

distance of one cable, but the south and south-west sides are clear.<br />

Dockyard.—<strong>The</strong> island is built completely over with the houses and<br />

stores of the Dutch naval establishment, which is centred here. <strong>The</strong>re is<br />

a depth of 24 feet alongside the jetty, powerful cranes, steam sawmills,<br />

smitheries, and every convenience for refitting on the island; also a floating<br />

dock 340 feet in length, with a breadth of entrance of 62 feet. This dock<br />

has taken a vessel of 5,700 tons, 289 feet long, and drawing 23 feet water.
