10 miles westward of Berikat point ; the Padang mountains, the summit<br />

of which is elevated 2,630 feet at 10 miles westward of the Saddles; and<br />

the double-peaked mountain, Gunong Maras (Grown peak), 2,300 feet<br />

high at about 20 miles from the north coast of the island.<br />

THE COAST from Berikat point trends 24 miles in a westerly<br />

direction to Langka point, 2| miles westward of which is Koba village.<br />

Timor island lies about 2^ miles off shore, at 5^ miles eastward of Langka<br />

point. Eastward of Timor island the shore may be approached to depths<br />

of 6 or 7 fathoms, but westward of the island reefs extend from 2 to 3<br />

miles offshore. About 16 miles N.W. by W. ^ W. from Langka point is the<br />

large village of Kerow, whence the coast trends in a northerly direction to<br />

Sungi Marawang, near which stands the towns of Eusa and Punkal Pinang.<br />

Dangerous reefs extend from 15 to 20 miles off this part of the coast.<br />

Koba road lies 2 miles westward of Langka point ; the anchorage is<br />

in 4^ fathoms, with the mouth of the river bearing S. ^ W., distant about<br />

3^ miles. Nearer the shore is Gantreng reef and other patches, westward<br />

of which the 3-fathom edge of the bank fronting the shore extends 3<br />

. miles off.<br />

ISLETS AND REEFS. — Tetawa bank.—Fronting the<br />

coast between the village of Kerow and Marawang river is a chain of banks<br />

from one to 5 miles broad, known under the general appellation of Tetawa<br />

bank, upon which are several scattered islands. Many patches on these<br />

banks dry at low water.*<br />

Barat (Kinsbergen) Reef, with 51 feet water, lies nearly 2<br />

miles North of Langka point ; from the reef the flagstaff at Koba village<br />

bears S.W. ^ W.<br />

PulO Buar (Colowy), the south-eastern of the islets, lies 11 miles<br />

northward of Langka point. <strong>The</strong> islet is surrounded by a reef, which<br />

in places extends to the distance of one mile. Many rocky patches, lie<br />

westward of the islet.<br />

Horse Rocks, nearly dry at low water,, lie to the eastward of Tetawa<br />

bank, with Pulo Buar bearing W. | N., distant 3J miles. A patch of<br />

IJ fathoms lies 2^ miles north-eastward of Horse rocks, with Pulo Buar<br />

beai-ing W. | S., distant 4^ miles.<br />

Mentawa reef lies 2 miles N.E. by N. from Pulo Buar, and is more<br />

extensive than Horse rocks.<br />

Goat shoal lies 3^ miles N.N.E. of Mentawa ; 9 feet water is reported on<br />

this shoal.<br />

Pulo Passir, Pulo Johora, and Pulo Tetawa are small islets on<br />

Tetawa bank, situated respectively at 4, 6 and 8 miles westward of Pulo<br />

Buar.<br />
