North. Rock, very small and barren, lies N. f E. nearly a mile from<br />

North island.<br />

Shoals.—^A shoal of 2f fathoms, the existence of which is doubtful, is<br />

reported to lie with the large Eamunia island bearing JST.N.E. IJ miles.<br />

A patch of 4| fathoms lies one-third of a mile in a south-easterly direction<br />

from this position.<br />

Clearing mark.—<strong>The</strong>re is a depth of 9 to 14 fathoms close to these<br />

dangers. Tanjong Stapah in line with South point bearing West, will<br />

lead clear to the southward of all the dangers near Eamunia islands.<br />

A Rock awash lies with South island bearing N.E., one-third of a<br />

mile, .ind the large Ramunia island N. by W. about the same distance.<br />

A three-fathom patch lies E.S.E. nearly half a mile from the rock<br />

awash.<br />

Stork Reef, lying N.E. by E. i E. half a mile from the threefathom<br />

patch,' is about 3 cables in e^xtent, and from its south-west point<br />

Barbukit hill is in line with the north hump of the large Ramunia island,<br />

distant a little more than half a mile.<br />

CongaltOU Skar, a rocky patch with 9 feet water, and 8 to<br />

12 fathoms close to, is the easternmost of the dangers lying near Ramunia<br />

slands. From it the middle of Large Lsland is in line with Peak rock, the<br />

atter distant one mile.<br />

Large island, W. :^ N., leads southward, and Tanjong Pungi, N.N.W. ^ "W,<br />

leads eastward of the Skar.<br />

Caution.—When the tide is running to the westward, vessels passine<br />

through North channel must be very careful that they are not set too near<br />

this danger, of which the lead will not give timely warning.<br />

A rock awash lies a short distance E.N.E., and a 4-fathom patch<br />

about a quarter of a mile N.N.E. from Peak rock. Another 4-fathom<br />

patch, with 12 fathoms near it, lies a short distance to the northward of<br />

Whale rock.<br />

Whale Rock, lying nearly nearly three-quarters of a mile N.E.<br />

from Peak rock, is a small ledge which is particularly dangerous, as it is<br />

only at about three-quarters ebb that a small rock becomes visible and<br />

indicates the existence of the danger. It is steep-to, and the depths in its<br />

vicinity are irregular, varying from 1 5 to 9 fathoms.<br />

Jones Reef, having 6 feet water, and 8 or 9 fathoms close to, lies<br />

N. by W. I W. a little over half a mile from Congalton Skar.<br />

.A Reef, about half a mile in extent, and with rocks above water, lies<br />

between North island and North i"ock. Its eastern extreme lies North from<br />

Peak rock nearly one mile ; and its western extreme rather less than half a<br />

mile S. by W. from North rock. <strong>The</strong>re are several patches between it<br />

and North island.
