PULO SAX7 is larger than Innang, and lies to the northward of it,<br />

the channel between them being about a cable wide. Inside these two<br />

islands are several islets, with channels between leading into Salat Bulang.<br />

A detached rocky patch lies S.E., a quarter of a mile from Sau light-<br />

house, from which a tongue of rocks and sand extend about 1^ miles in a<br />

southerly direction, forming the north side of the narrow channel between<br />

Sau and Innang.<br />

LIGHT.—A lighthouse painted white stands on the east point of Sau<br />

island, from which is exhibited at an elevation of 118 feet, a fixed white<br />

light, visible in clear weather from a distance of 8 miles.<br />

Pulo Innang Eechil is a small island lying on the north-east part<br />

of the re^f which surrounds Pulo Sau. A. shoal with 2 to 2^ fathoms water<br />

extends about half a mile N.W. by N. from Innang Kechil, and another<br />

shoal, half a mile in extent, with 2f fathoms, lies a quarter of a mile further<br />

off in the same direction.<br />

Van Gogh islet, surrounded by a reef which extends sonth-westf<br />

ward nearly half a mile, lies half a mile north of Sau island. About half<br />

a mile N.N.W. of this islet is a coral reef with less than 6 feet water, the<br />

northern edge of which has 3 fathoms, and lies with the north point of Pulo<br />

Sau bearing S. by E. \ E. distant 2 miles.<br />

Clearing mark.—Sau lighthouse in line with or open of the east<br />

point of Innang Kechil leads eastward of all these dangers, and Malang,<br />

Yarong, (an islet, off the eastern shore,) bearing E. by S., leads northward.<br />

<strong>The</strong> depths decrease rather quickly ucider a depth of 10 fathoms near the<br />

dangers just described, and in the event of a vessel standing towards the<br />

southermost of them getting a cast of 10 fathoms or less, she should tack<br />

immediately.<br />

Malang Orang reef.—<strong>The</strong> north-east coast of Battam, from abreast<br />

Pulo Sau to Tanjong 'N'ongsa or Burang, the western point of the north<br />

entrance to Ehio strait, is fronted by a reef, extending in some places to the<br />

distance of three-quarters of a mile. Malang Orang, an isolated reef,<br />

half a mile in extent, with 5 to 8 fathoms close-to, lies with Tanjong<br />

Malang Orang bearing W.N.W. distant about 7 cables.<br />

A white buoy marks the eastern edge of this I'eef<br />

Pan reef, lying in the northei-n entrance of Ehio strait, is visible at<br />

low water, when it appears as a long ridge of black stones ; the reef is 6<br />

cables long, and 2 cables broad, with 5 to 7 fathoms close to.<br />

Beacons.—A large screw pile beacon erected on the north-east end<br />

of this reef, lies with Tanjong Malang Orang bearing S.W. by W. \ W.,<br />

distant 2\ miles. A black buoy in 4f fathoms lies off the south-west<br />

extreme of the reef, with the beacon bearing. N.E. \ N. distant 7 cables.
