RODONG GROUP lies to the westward of Niamok and Missana,<br />

{see page 412) and comprises six islands, separated by narrow unavailable<br />

channels. Eodong, the northern ' island, is 797 feet high, and is one" of<br />

the principal land-marks for, making Bhio strait. <strong>The</strong> three eastera<br />

islands are known as the Desie islands : the two western as the Madang<br />

islands.,<br />

<strong>The</strong> channel between Missana and the Eodong .group is encumbered<br />

with numerous dangers, and should not be used.<br />

DUA ISLANDS, siliiated a,bout 2\ miles westward of Madang<br />

islands, are two low islands, each encircled by a reef extending ill some<br />

places a quarter of a mile from! the shore and divided by a narrow channel<br />

having a depth of 4 fathoms. Two reefs, each about half a mile in extent,<br />

and separated by a narrow deep-water channel, lie from 1 J to 2 miles north-<br />

westward of Dua islands. On thfe south end of the southern reef is an<br />

islet, and at the north end are some rocks above water ; on the north-east<br />

extreme of the northern reef is Tree rock, 14 feet above high water.<br />

A coral patch, with 3 fathoms water, alid 11 to 14 fathoms close around<br />

it, lies N.W. by W. | W. one mile from Tree rock ; the channel between<br />

them is safe.<br />

TETAMPAN GROUP, situated north-westward of the iRodOng<br />

group, occupies a circular space about 4 miles in diameter, and is comprised<br />

of several islands, islets, and rocks, separated from each other by narrow<br />

intrica,te channels which are obstructed by numerous reefs and dangers.<br />

Tetampan, the south-western island, is 390 feet high, and the most con-<br />

spicuous of the group ; Binan and Katang Linga forms its eastern and<br />

northern limits, and the Nopong islands, with the adjacent islets and reefs,<br />

its north-western.<br />

TEMIANG STRAIT, leading from the <strong>China</strong> sea to Durian and<br />

other straits adjacent, is about 14 miles long in a west-north-west and east-<br />

south-east direction, and 2 miles broad ;<br />

on its south-side are the northern<br />

islands of the Sfebangka group, Temiang, Pintu, and Kebat, and to the<br />

northward are Niamok, the Eodong group, Dua islands, and Tree rock<br />

reefs.<br />

A dangerous pinnacle rock, awash' at low water, and diflScult to m&ke<br />

out, lies in the southern entrance of this strait, about one mile N.E. of<br />

Eeman islands, a group of small islands off the south-east extreme of<br />

Temiang. This danger may be passed on either feide, the 'Channel to the<br />

southward being three-quarters of a mile vride, but it is preferable io'pass<br />

to the northward ; in doing so, however, care is necessary to avoid tft6
