20 MALACCA STRAIT.—SUMATRA COAST. [chap. i.<br />

Sawang village, consisting of 200 houses, is situated nearly 2 miles<br />

fi'om the bar of the creek, and like other Malay villages is built in a<br />

swamp. Small supplies of provisions may be procured.<br />

Merdu point, lying 23 miles east-south-eastward of Batu Pedir, iS<br />

low and sandy with a few small trees ; a run of water, resembling when<br />

at a distance a path in the valley, is conspicuous during the rainy season.<br />

A grove of trees is situate 1| miles to the westward of the point.<br />

Merdu village is half a mile from the sea on the banks of a small river.<br />

<strong>The</strong> anchorage off Merdu is in 18 fathoms at one mil6 from the shore,<br />

with the village bearing South. <strong>The</strong> water shoals suddenly from 10 to 2<br />

fathoms.<br />

Samalaugan creek is situated 7^ miles eastward of Merdu point.<br />

<strong>The</strong> entrance cannot be distinguished from the sea, but it lies 1| miles'<br />

westward of two large trees which are near the beach. On either side of<br />

the entrance there is a small fort.<br />

<strong>The</strong> anchorage off Samalangan is in 12 to 15 fathoms at one mile off<br />

shore, with Merdu point bearing W. by N. ^ N., and Rajah point E. J N.<br />

Rajah, point having a high grove of trees near its extremity, forms<br />

with Merdu point a bight, which off Samalangan creek is If iniles deep,<br />

and has a depth of 24 fathoms decreasing gradually towards the shore.<br />

Rajah point may be approached to a depth of 10 fathoms.<br />

Banks.—At 2^ miles east of Rajah point, is a rocky patch of 6<br />

fathoms, about 1^ miles offshore; also at 7 miles east of the point, between<br />

Pedada and Jimpa creeks, at 1-^ miles off shore, is another patch of 6<br />

fathoms, shoaling quickly towards the shore. On the north side, these<br />

banks are steep-to.<br />

Elephant mountain or Friar's hood, distant 15J miles S.E. ^ S.<br />

from Rajah point, is an isolated and conspicuous landmark, visible nearly<br />

40 miles in clear weather.<br />

Fassangan point, situated 22 miles eastward of Rajah point, is<br />

low and sandy, with a few cocoa-nut trees near its extreme. Between<br />

Rajah and Passangan points the shore may be approached to a depth of 14<br />

fathoms. Passangan point is steep, there being 30 fathoms within half a<br />

mile of the beach.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are two entrances to Passangan creek ; the principal one is<br />

situated 4 miles westward of the point, the other half a mile eastward of<br />

the point ; both entrances are passable by boats at high water only.<br />

Five miles eastward of Passangan point there is a high square grove of<br />

trees situated near the entrance of Klumpang Dua creek.<br />

Goma-Goma or Agun-Agun point lies 9 miles eastward of<br />

•Passangan point, the coast between forming a bight. Goma-Goma point is<br />

low with a little jungle, and vessels should not shoal less than 14 or<br />
