PulO Rangas, ia a pile of rocks SO or 60 feet high, and covered with<br />

trees. <strong>The</strong> highest trees on this island are visible on a clear day 17 miles ;<br />

on the north-enst side of the island a coral bank with 3J fathoms water<br />

projects a cable distant, with a depth of 12 fathoms close to its edge.<br />

At a cable distant from the north-west point there is a small rock which<br />

always breaks, elsewhere the island is' bold having 12 or 13 fathoms close<br />

to it. On the south-east side of the island there are two high' rocks, steep-<br />

to all round, and nearly joining the island. A small rock 4 feet high, lies<br />

E. by S. half a mile from Pulo Eangas.<br />

Ancborage.—A vessel may anchor on either side of Pulo Rangas<br />

within a quarter of a mile, in 12 or 13 fathoms, mud. <strong>The</strong>re is also good<br />

anchorage between Pulo Rangas and Rigas point, and between Pulo Rangas<br />

and Pasier Besar, in 11 fathoms, mud and fine sand. See foot note, p. 152.<br />

Rigas Islands.—Ptdo Rusum, the largest of these islands,<br />

is half a mile long north and south, and lies across the entrance to Rigas<br />

bay ;. it is high on the west side, with steep rocky cHfEs and covered with<br />

trees,; on the, east side there is a small space of low land with a number<br />

of cocoa-nut trees. Rusum rock lies three-quarters of a mile S.W. ^ W.<br />

from the centre of Rusum island ; a quarter of a mile N.W. from Rusum<br />

rock is a small rock steep-to, having 2J fathoms water.<br />

Rocks.—Two rocks lying close together, with a least depth of<br />

2 fathoms, and 6 fathoms close to, lies with the east point of Pulo Rusum<br />

bearing N.E. by N. distant 3^ cables ; and a rock, with probably less than<br />

6 feet, which breaks in bad weather, lies with the same point bearing<br />

N, by W. 4 W., distant 2^ caljles.<br />

Pulo Engang lies a cable eastward of the south-east point of<br />

Pulo Rusum, and is a pile of steep rocks covered with trees.<br />

Pulo Samete, lying to the north-east of Pulo Rusum, is low and<br />

has a number of trees on it.<br />

Pulo Pogase consists of two rocks joined, surmounted by a few<br />

bushes or small trees,<br />

Selung peninsula, forming the south part of Rigas bay, is 400 or<br />

5QP feet high with high rocky cliffs; like all the land in the vicinity of<br />

Rigas, excepting that under cultivation, it is covered with trees from<br />

summit to the cliffs. <strong>The</strong> peninsula in joined to the mainland by a low<br />

sandy isthmus and therefore appears very much like an island.<br />

Tanjong Selung forms the southern point of Rigas bay. Tanjong<br />

Batu Tntung, also rocky and high, is about three-quarters of a mile north-<br />

ward of Selung point ; between these points is formed a bay a third of a<br />

mile deep, with, a sandy beach.<br />

Rigas harbour is formed between Pulo Engang and Piiilo Sam-<br />

ete on the west, and Tanjong Batu Tutung on the east; it is -about half<br />
