A reef, with 3J fathoms, lies 2^ miles E.N.E. of Lenoro reef.<br />

West Lenore (Hydrograaf) reef is 3^ cables long, by 2j<br />

cables wide, and lies S.W. | W., distant 8| miles from the south hill of<br />

Pulo Nangka; it has 2 fathoms water, and from 15 to 21 fathoms close<br />

around.*<br />

Corcyra reef, about half a mile in diameter, with 1| fathoms water,<br />

lies with the south peak of Nangka island, bearing E. by N. distant<br />

4 miles.f<br />

Hydrograaf reef, extending one mile in a north-west and south-east<br />

direction aud about 4 cables wide, has a least depth of one fethom, from which<br />

mount Tajem Laki bears S.W. ^ W., and the south peak of Nangka<br />

island East. <strong>The</strong> reef is steep-to, with depths of 15 to 20 fathoms within<br />

one cable.<br />

GuSOng Serlang, one mile in length and 3 cables wide, has a<br />

bank of brown sand above high water on its north-west part, from which<br />

Pigeon island bears W. by S. f S. distant 6J miles. Depths of J 2 to 16<br />

fathoms were found close around this reef.<br />

Nearly midway between Gusong Serlang and Bakau island, are two<br />

detached coral patches, having one fathom water.<br />

MIDDLE GROUP.—Meraj ah island, the largest of the<br />

Montaran Middle group, is low, flat, and covered with mangroves. <strong>The</strong><br />

fringing coral reef extends in places to the distance of half a mile.<br />

Big tree (Bulian) island is 150 feet high, the highest of the<br />

Middle group, thickly wooded and surrounded by a coral reef which extends<br />

half a mile north- v/est and south-east from the island.<br />

Tempuling is a small islet situated one mile west of Big tree island.<br />

Channer (Berisi) island half a mile west of Merajah, is similar<br />

to Tempuling, having reefs extending 3 cables from its north and south<br />

points.<br />

W^arren reef is a small bank of dead coral 5 feet high. Shallow<br />

patches lie about three-quarters of a mile north and south of Warren reef,<br />

and a similar patch 2 miles W. by S. of it.<br />

Gubbins reef is a large reef, having near the middle a bank of dead<br />

coral 3 feet high. This reef is nearly connected with the Middle group by<br />

two other reefs. At 1^ miles eastward of Gubbins reef is another large<br />

reef, with detached heads off it.<br />

long N.N.W. and S.S.E., having one foot water, 9 fathoms close to the eastern edge, and<br />

in lat. 2° 37' S., long. 108° 25' B., is considered to be identical with one or other of the<br />

charted reefs.<br />

t Maa-sen-waal shoal, mentioned in former edition, seems to be identical with Corcyra<br />

reef.
