Ayer rock of 2^ fathoms, lies W. ^ N. distant 3^ cables from the<br />

north-west point of Hoorn island. Its west side is marked by a black<br />

beacon buoy.<br />

Haarlem island (Ayer KecMl), lies 14 miles north-westward<br />

of Hoorn island. It is 1^ cables in extent, covered with trees, and<br />

encircled by a reef, which is steep- to, extending (as is the case with all<br />

these islands, farthest from the east sides) to about one cable. A patch of<br />

3^ fathoms lies 1-^ cables north-east of the island.<br />

Mounikeudam reef is about 2 cables in extent, and steep-to, with<br />

a patch of sand which dries at low water. It lies with the centre of<br />

Haarlem island bearing W. | N. distant one mile. A white beacon buoy<br />

marks its north-east side.<br />

NORTHERN APPROACH.—Edam island (Damar<br />

Besar), the largest island in the bay, lies between the outer channel<br />

route from the westward, and the approach to Batavia from northward and<br />

eastward. It is about 3^ cables in diameter, covered with tall trees, and<br />

encircled by a reef, which on the north and east sides extend to the distance<br />

of one cable ; near the edge of the reef are depths of 14 to 20 fathoms. See<br />

lights.<br />

Edam reef, about 2 cables in diameter, and with a sand bank dry at<br />

low water on its southern part, is steep- to, with 16 to 18 fathoms at a short<br />

distance. <strong>The</strong> sand bank lies with Edam lighthouse bearing S. ^ W.,<br />

distant 6 cables. A beacon buoy, with black and white rings lies on the<br />

north side of the reef.<br />

Kroya reef or Nassau bank<br />

is about i^ cables in extent, with<br />

a depth of 1;| fathoms on the shoalest ledge, 3 to 4 fathoms around,<br />

and 16 to 17 fathoms at a short • distance. It lies with Edam lighthouse<br />

bearing S. | E. distant 8 J miles, and South Watcher about N.W. \ W.<br />

distant about 9 miles. A patch of 6 fathoms lies 2\ miles S.W. by W. of<br />

it, but no other patches are known of in this locality.<br />

Clearing Mark.—<strong>The</strong> whole of Alkmaar island open eastward or<br />

westward of Edam islands leads clear of Kroya reef.<br />

Alkmaar island (Damar Kechil), lies i^ miles southward of<br />

Edam island. It is about 260 yards in length, covered with trees, and<br />

encircled by a reef which on its north-east side extends to the distance of<br />

one cable, with a depth of 13 fathoms close-to.<br />

Enkhuizen island (Nyamuk Kechil), is similar to Alkmaar<br />

island ; the encircling reef extends about 1;^ cables northward of it, with<br />

about 11 fathoms close- to.<br />

Leiden island (Nyamuk Besar), lying i^ miles south-eastward<br />

of Enkhuizen, is about 450 yards in length, covered with bushes, and<br />

encircled by a reef which extends one cable to the south-westward, and<br />

2^ cables eastward of it. A rock of 1| fathoms '(Amstel shoal) lies just
