mile, with some rocks above water on its outer edge. A patch of 3 fathoms<br />

lies 4 cables off the west edge of the reef.<br />

Between Hancock and Shoal-water island I'eefs is a narrow channel<br />

with depths of 6 to 10 fathoms.<br />

LIGHT.—From a white lighthouse, 200 feet high, erected on the<br />

west side of Shoal-water Island, is exhibited at an elevation of 215 feet<br />

above high water, a fixed white light, visible in clear weather from a<br />

distance of 20 miles. Position, lat. 3° 19^' S., long. 107° 12|' E.<br />

One-PatllOlIl Patch..—A patch having a depth of one fathom, and<br />

7 to 9 fathoms around, lies W. \ N. nearly 2 miles from Shoal-water<br />

island.<br />

Embleton Rocks, awash, he on a sand-bank which nearly dries,<br />

distant 2 miles N".W. by N. from Shoal-water island ; there are depths of<br />

11 to 14 fathoms around the bank.<br />

Bliss SIlOEIs, lie one mile north-eastward of Embleton rocks, and<br />

are about one-third of a mile in extent ; the least depth is 2 feet, with<br />

6 to 12 fathoms at a short distance. A patch of 3 fathoms lies midway<br />

betw een Bliss shoals and Hancock island.<br />

VANSITTART SHOALS are a number of rocky patches<br />

extending 10 miles south-westward of Bakau island, east side of Maccles-<br />

field channel. <strong>The</strong> two southern patches of this group lie nearly east<br />

and west from each other, and about 3 miles apart. From the western<br />

patch of 4 feet, Kwil island bears N.N.E. \ E. distant 11^ miles ; from the<br />

eastern patch of 1^ feet, Kwil island bears N. by E. distant 11 mile?.<br />

A patch of 3f fathoms lies with Bakou island bearing N. \ E., distant<br />

1\ miles.<br />

Near the centre of the Vansittart group are patches extending about<br />

one mile, one of which nearly dries.<br />

<strong>The</strong> northern patches of the group are 2 miles apart in an E.N.E. and<br />

W.S.W. direction. Prom the south-west patch of 4 feet, Kwil island bears<br />

N.N.E. distant Q\ miles. From the north-east patch, of 1^ fathoms,<br />

Bakau island bears N.E. distant 2\ miles.<br />

G-EORGE BANKS is the name given to the banks lying southward<br />

and south-westward of Murong point.<br />

TwO-and-a-Half Fathoms Bank, formerly known as Ge<strong>org</strong>e<br />

bank, is 2\ miles long, and one mile broad, within a depth of 5 fathoms.<br />

<strong>The</strong> least depth, 2| fathoms, lies with Murong point, bearing N. \ W.,<br />

distant 6^ miles.<br />

Rocky point hill open eastward of Murong point, leads eastward of the<br />

bank.
