ward. Haai reef, a patoli of 2 fathoms, lies a quarter of a mile to the<br />

southward of it ; aud there is a rock above water about 3 cables distant<br />

to the north-westward.<br />

Great bank, is situated within the edge of the 5 fathom line<br />

fronting the bight lying between the south-east extreme of Pulong Galang<br />

and Selatan island. <strong>The</strong> bank is 1^ miles long, with a least depth of 2J<br />

fathoms. <strong>The</strong> anchorage in the bay inside the bank was formerly con-<br />

sidered good, but reefs extend both from Gralang and Selatan, which<br />

render it anything but a safe and convenient place for large vessels seeking<br />

anchorage.<br />

East bank lies one-third of a mile S.E. ^ E. of Dempo point, the<br />

outer point of the islands eastward of Selatan. It is little more than half<br />

a mile in extent, with from 3 to 9 feet water, and 8 to 9 fathoms close-to.<br />

JaSSenS shoal lying between Pulo Tarong (the island close<br />

northward of Selatan) and Great Garras island, is about 3J miles ions, and<br />

one mile broad, with 4 to 18 feet water; the south-east extreme of the<br />

shoal which is nearly in the line between Dempo point and the east end of<br />

Great Garras, terminates in a reef which dries at half tide. <strong>The</strong>re is a<br />

channel on each side of Jassens shoal, but the northern one is very<br />

narrow at the western end, having a general depth of 3^ fathoms, and is<br />

only available for small vessels : the southern channel is nowhere less than<br />
