approaching Bongas bay, the north point of entrance kept bearing East, or<br />

the middle of a small hill at the bottom of the bay, in line with a high hill<br />

inland, leads clear southward of Marlbro' rock- when in the entrance,<br />

borrow towards the northern side to avoid the shoals oflf Pulo Cassie,<br />

and anchor between it and the island, where there is good shelter. At<br />

the south-east angle of the bay there is anchorage in 6 to 12 fathoms water,<br />

secured from nearly all winds ; shoal water extends off the point and island<br />

that form the north-east side of this anchorage, and there is also a shoal<br />

nearlj' in the middle of the entrance. <strong>The</strong>re are several villages in this<br />

bay, and towards Padang.*<br />

Brandytvine bay is shallow, and lies between Padang road and<br />

Bongas bay. It affords shelter froin North and West winds near its head<br />

to light-draught vessels, northward of a 2f -fathoms bank, where depths of<br />

3 to 4 fathoms, mud, will be obtained.<br />

Shoal water extends about half a mil6 southward of Ujong Batu Pileh<br />

the western point of the bay, and the depth 'is but 4 fathoms between<br />

it and Pulo Telur.<br />

Marlbro' rock, in the southern approach to Brandywine bay,<br />

lies W. by N". f N. 1^ miles from the north point of Bongas bay, and three-<br />

quarters of a mile S. by W. ^ W. from Pulo Teliir, with 15 and 16<br />

fathoms close-to. Between Marlbro' rock and Pulo Teliir there is a<br />

safe passage.<br />

Simgi Fisang bay lying close southward of Bongas bay, is about<br />

one mile across, and open to westerly winds. Two rocks He in the<br />

entrance, with depths of 1 J and 2 fathoms ; abreast the rocks, close to the<br />

northern shore, there is narrow passage with 15 and 17 fathoms, decreasing<br />

inside to 8 and 9 fathoms; there is also a narrow passage between Pulo<br />

Kuah off its entrance, and the southern point of the bay.<br />

Sungi Fiuang bay lies southward of Sungi Pisang bay, and<br />

north-eastward of Pulo Merak. It is free from outlying dangers. In this<br />

bay vessels are sheltered from almost every wind, it being only open<br />

to S.S.W., and the depths are from 26 fathoms in the middle, decreasing to<br />

11 and 6 fathoms at its head.<br />

TRUSSAN HARBOUR, formed eastward of the large island<br />

Pulo Tyabeda or Sabadda, is about 5 miles in extent, and safe, with<br />

general depths of from 8 to 16 fathoms, soft bottom. It is a place with<br />

considerable trade. <strong>The</strong>re are two passages into the harbour, on either<br />

side of Pulo Tyabeda ; the northern one, about one-third of a mile wide,<br />

b ears East from the north end of Pulo Merak, and lies close to the southward<br />

of Sungi Pinang ba,y.<br />
