Shoal-water idatid should not be approadhed from the westward nearer<br />

than 3 miles; bearing N.N.E. | E. it will lead one mile westward of<br />

Branding breakers. •<br />

<strong>The</strong>Padang, Haaijen, Turtle, and Hancock shoals maybe approached to<br />

one mile, if a good look-out be kept when in their vicinity.<br />

CLEMENT CHANNEL.<br />

This channel is much narrower and more encumbered with dangers than<br />

either Macclesfield or Stolze channels. It is separated from the former by<br />

the four small islands, named Bakau, Klambau, Slemar, Kwil, and Pulo<br />

Leat, which form its western limit. To the eastward it is separated<br />

from Stolze channel by Ayer, Klemar, and Gb-esik, three small islands<br />

lying close together, so that the entrances to both channels, either from the<br />

southward or the northward, are common.<br />

ISLETS AND REEFS.—Bakau (Low) and Klambau<br />

(Saddlo), are two small islands nearly one mile apart, and about<br />

half amile in diaineter, lying in a S.E. by S. direction' about 8 miles fi-om<br />

Pulo Leat. Eakau island, the westernmost, is 123 feet high ; Klambau<br />

island has two hills forming a saddle, the western hill being 210 feet, and<br />

the eastern 266 feet high. Both islands are surounded by reefs.<br />

R6ef.—-A- dangerous reef nearly one mile in extent lies one mile northeastward<br />

of Klambau island.<br />

Slemar (Sand) Island, lying 3^ miles north-westward of Bakau<br />

island, is small, low, and surrounded by rgcks to the distance of on^-third<br />

of amUe.<br />

Kwil (Barn) Island, lying about l J miles eastward from Slemar<br />

island, is about a third of a mile in diameter, 154 feet feet high, axid<br />

surrounded by a reef to the distance of about one-third of a mile.<br />

Reefs, dry at low water, extend 1| miles between the bearings, of<br />

S. by E., and S. by W. from Barn island.<br />

Ayer (Soutll) Island, one of.,the! islands on the east side of<br />

Clement channel, lies S,E. byE.-^ E., 10 miles from the south-east point of<br />

Pulo Leat. It is about one male in diameter, 200 feet in height, and<br />

surrounded by a reef extending about half a mile ; off its south extreme is<br />

an isolated reef, distant three-quarters of a mile. <strong>The</strong> reef is steep, to.r<br />

. Gjpesik or: Table, islaiid, lymg 2 miles eastward from Ayer i,sj^l*(?^ and<br />

bordering Stolze channel, is described on page 350. ,<br />

Klemar (North) Island, 240 feet high, lying IJ miles northward<br />

of Ayer island, is surrounded by a reef, which expends about one<br />

thijrd of a mile. At three-quarters of a -mile E..jN.E. from the. island-is a<br />

reef dry at low water, with 16 fathoms closest©, and 15 fathoms between<br />
