of stones on which the sea breaks at times, extending 3^ miles northward<br />

•of Kaik point, south side of Inner channel.<br />

Buoy.—-^ white beacon buoy marks its north extreme in 3| fathoms.<br />

Menschen-eter (Laki) island, is low, covered with tall trees,<br />

and about half a mile in diameter. It is separated from Menscheh-eter<br />

reef by a narrow channel having depth of 4 to 10 fathoms. South-west of<br />

the island there is good anchorage during the easterly monsoon.<br />

Serang reef, dry at low water, lies near the eastern edge of Menschen-<br />

€ter reef, and IST.E. f N. about 11 miles from Kaik point. Tenga, a small<br />

patch of IJ feet, lies 6 cables N.E. by N. of Serang reef. Between Tenga<br />

and Menschen-eter reef are several rocks which nearly dry.<br />

Karang di Tenga, with a least depth of l^ fathoms near its western<br />

edge, is 8 cables in extent. <strong>The</strong> shallow spot lies N.N.E. i E., distant<br />

If miles from Serang village point. Its north extreme is marked by a<br />

white buoy.<br />

Untung Java reef extends 1| miles north-north-eastward of<br />

Untung Java point, and is a continuation of the mud bank fringing the<br />

shore on either side of it. Near its extreme are patches of sand and stones<br />

which dry at low water.<br />

Buoy.— ^-A- white beacon buoy marks the north extreme of the reef<br />

which is steep to. there being eight fathoms just beyond the buoy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following islets and dangers form the north side of Inner channel,<br />

and separate it from Outer channel :<br />

Struisyogel rocks, the western of these dangers, form a group of<br />

six coral patches, covering a space of about one mile in extent in a north<br />

and south direction. <strong>The</strong> least depth on these patches is 2| fathoms, with<br />

from 12 to 20 fathoms between and around them.<br />

Beacons.—A white beacon buoy marks the north edge of Purak, the<br />

northern patch, also marking the south side of Outer channel ;<br />

and a black<br />

beacon with cone is erected on Besar, the southern patch, marking the<br />

north side of Inner channel. From this beacon Menschen-eter island<br />

bears S.E. ^ S. distance about 4| miles.<br />

Karang Laut, two patches with a least depth of 3^ fathoms, together<br />

about 1^ cables in extent, lie about E. I N. about 2^ miles from Struis-<br />

vogel beacon.<br />

Tongara reef is a small coral patch of 3 fathoms and steep-to, lying<br />

S.E. ^ E. distance If miles from Karang Laut. A red beacon buoy marks<br />

its south side. Tenga reef, a small coral patch . of 8 fathoms in Outer<br />

channel, lies E.N.E distant 2 miles from Tongara reef.<br />

Pedynab reef is about 1^ cables in extent, with a least depth of 4 feet,<br />

and steep-to. It lies with the west extreme of Great Kombuis bearing<br />

E. by N. f N. distant about 8 cables. A black beacon buoy marks its<br />

south-west edge.<br />
