Luctor reefs.— ^A. patch dry at low water, lies about 2 milesW. by S. ^ S.<br />

of Grubbins reef, with a patch of 3f fathoms, on which the Luctor struck,<br />

at l\ miles N.W. ^ N. from it.<br />

East (Pesemut) island is the easternmost of the Montaran<br />

islands. It is about half a mile in extent, of coral formation, thickly<br />

wooded, and surrounded by a sandy beach. <strong>The</strong> trees in the centre forma<br />

sharp pointed summit J. 12 feet high, making the island conspicuous and<br />

easily recognised when seen from a distance. Isolated coral patches extend<br />

one mile off the south-east part of the island.<br />

Small (Tuan) island, 66 feet high, situated ] f miles southwestward<br />

from East island, is about one-third of a mile long, surrounded by a<br />

reef, and covered with a few stunted trees.<br />

Justina reef half a mile in length, has a sand-bank above high water,<br />

one cable in extent, on its south end, with East island bearing W.N.W.<br />

distant 1^ miles.<br />

Whittingham reef, lyiug 2 miles N.E. by E. ^ E. from Pesemut<br />

island, is small with 2^ fathoms water. In the centre of the triangle<br />

formed by this reef, East island and Justina reef, is a small patch of 1^<br />

fathoms.<br />

Catherine or Evans reef, about 2 cables in extent, has a least a<br />

depth of one fathom, with Pesemut island bearing W. | N., distant 4^<br />

miles. Patches of 4 and 6 fathoms lie about half a mile north-eastward of<br />

it. This danger is steep-to with depths of 8 to IS fathoms around, and is<br />

rarely indicated by breakers or discoloured water.<br />

CAUTION. — "Vessels using Carimata strait are advised to pass to<br />

the eastward of Catherine or Evans reef, as there is no passage between the<br />

Montaran islands that can be recommended.<br />

REEFS.—Condor reefs.—Two small coral patches 2\ cables<br />

apart, north-east and south-west, the southern patch having 2^ fathoms,<br />

lie with East island bearing E.S.E., and Nangka south peak bearing<br />

S.W. by W. distant 10 miles. <strong>The</strong> edges of the reef are steep-to, and no<br />

breakers were observed.<br />

Plying Pish, bank, with a least depth of 3 fathoms, lies with Nangka<br />

island peak bearing S. by W. \ W., distant 18 miles. Within a distance<br />

of half a mile are several patches of 8 and 10 fathoms, beyond this distance<br />

the depth is over 20 fathoms.<br />

Ontario reef, composed of dead coral, is about 2^ cables long, and<br />

at half tide a patch of sharp spiral rocks about 20 yards in diameter<br />

uncovers. It lies with Carimata peak bearing N.N.E. | E., distant 28f<br />

miles, and nearly in mid-channel between the Carimata and Montaran<br />

islands.
