<strong>The</strong> EAST COAST of SUMATRA, betweeu the Zutphen<br />

islands and lat. 5° S. was surveyed by the Dutch in 1884-5; but from<br />

thence to Banka straits, has never been regularly surveyed; the coast<br />

northward of that parallel, therefore, must be navigated with caution*<br />

Prom Nibong river the coast is low, covered with wood to the' water's<br />

edge, and trends north nearly 9 miles to Penat river j thence a further<br />

distance of 20 miles in the same direction to Tanjong Sekopong. It is<br />

fronted by extensive shallow banks, which to the northward project from<br />

10 to 15 miles from the shore.<br />

Mount Imbong or Samang, 840 feet high, in lat. 5° 21' s., is<br />

the most prominent hill on the coast near Two Brothers islands. It is an<br />

oblong ridge, of gradual ascent, and covered with trees.<br />

Knob hill or Labuan HatU, 322 feet high, situated about<br />

8 miles north-westward of mount Imbong, and near Penat river, is con-<br />

spicuous from having a knob on its crest, and will be seen when coming<br />

from the southward, directly it opens of mount Imbong.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Maringi river debouches on the coast, directly eastward of mount<br />

Imbong, and may be entered by boats at high water. <strong>The</strong> flourishing town<br />

of Maringi lies within the entrance, the only one in this neighbourhood.<br />

Northward of the Maringi a sandy beach commences, whilst to the south-<br />

ward tall trees fringe the shore.<br />

A. patch of 3 ,<br />

feet, with 3 fathoms close-to, lies about 2 miles off<br />

shore, with mount Iipbppg bearing W. by S. \ S. distant about 6 miles<br />

and Penat point N. J E., distant 4 miles.<br />

Shahbundar bank.T-Between Penat point, and Tanjong Sekopong<br />

situated ^20 mUes to the northward, the shore bank within a depth ,«f<br />

5 fathoms, extends 10 mUes ofE abreast the Two Brothers islandi^, the<br />

channel between the bank and, those islands being about 7 miles wide.f<br />

Within this 5 fathom depth, and extending from 5 to 6 miles off shore are<br />

several ridges of sand and coral with depths of 1^ to 2 fathoms, named the<br />

Shahbundar bank, and lying with the South Brother between the bearings<br />

of E. I N. and E.S.E. A patch of 4 fatlioras lies 10 miles off shore, with<br />

South Brother bearing S.E. ^ E., distant 7^ miles.<br />
