Steil island, tte easternmost of the group, has a reef extending<br />

3 cables north-west of it ; between Steil and Boom islands there are<br />

depths from 16 to 20 fathoms.<br />

A small reef with 4 fathoms water, and about one mile in extent, lies<br />

one mile northward from Steil island.<br />

Osterly channel, the passage between the reefs extending eastward<br />

of Carimata island and Lising, is intricate, being obstructed hy many<br />

shallow patches, between which the currents run with strength. Vessels<br />

should not use this channel, but pass eastward of Steil island.<br />

Buan or Pyramid island, the remarkable conical peak of<br />

which is 1,017 feet high, lies 7J miles north-eastward of Carimata island.<br />

A reef extends 4| cables eastward £i-om the island.<br />

Ular and Pulo Nibong<br />

lie respectively W.N.W. distant 1^ miles,<br />

and E. by S. three-quarters of a mile from Buan island, with channels<br />

between them having depths of 8 to 12 fatlioms ; both these islands are<br />

rocky and have a few trees upon them.<br />

A reef, which occasionally breaks, lies nearly 2 miles E. by S. from<br />

Nibong island, with apparently foul ground between.<br />

Jamsetjee or Seno shoal, composed of coarse sand and stones,<br />

has 5 fathoms least water, and lies with Buan island peak bearing E.S.E.,<br />

and Bliang peak S.S.W.<br />

Leman islands, are a group of rocky islands lying 15 miles north<br />

of Carimata island. Pako, the easternmost island is the largest and 164 feet<br />

high, with a reef extending to the northward about 6 cables. <strong>The</strong><br />

M estern island, Leman Budi, has a rounded appearance, and is covered<br />

with verdure.<br />

<strong>The</strong> channel between Budi and the eastern islands of the group is one<br />

mile wide, with a depth of 14 fathoms ; but the channels between the<br />

other islands are narrow and obstructed by reefs.<br />

SHOALS.—Gwalia shoal is the southernmost of a group of<br />

coral shoals extending about 14 miles in a north and south direction, and<br />

situated north-westward of the Leman islands. It is a round coral patch<br />

about 2 cables in diameter, with less than 6 feet on it at low water, from<br />

which Budi, the western Leman island, bears S.E. by E. ^ E. about<br />

21^ miles, and Carimata peak S.E. | S. <strong>The</strong> depths around the shoal are<br />

from 7 to 10 fathoms. <strong>The</strong> wreck of the Gwalia lies on its southern<br />

edge.<br />

Erickson shoal, about 2 cables in extent, with a least depth of<br />

4J fathoms, lies about 3 miles north-west of Gwalia shoal, with depths of<br />

7 to 1 1 fathoms at one cable distant.<br />

Twilight reef, upon which the American ship Twilight struck, lies<br />

l^.E. by N. nearly 5 miles from Grwalia, shoal.
