easterly current runs with, little interruption; she must, however, be<br />

careful when standing towards Tanjong Puni, as the bank is steep-to, and<br />

she might suddenly fall from 7 to 3 fathoms before there would be time<br />

for a second cast of the lead.<br />

Amelia bank is a small patch of hard ^ound, with 2f fathoms<br />

water, at the south-east extreme of Muntok bank ; it is connected to the<br />

shoal patches of that bank by a ridge having 4 to 5 fathoms water.<br />

From Amelia bank the western extreme of Karang Brom-Brom bears Bast<br />

4^ miles, and Monopin hill N.N. W., 12 miles.<br />

Bukit Belu bearing N. ^ E., leads one mile eastward of Amelia bank ;<br />

and the same hill N. by E. ^ E., leads the same distance westward.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dry rocks -of Karang Brom-Brom bearing E. by N. clears the south<br />

side of the bank, which should not be approached under a depth of 10<br />

fathoms.<br />

Muntok bank extends from Amelia bank in a direction nearly<br />

parallel to the shore, for a distance of 10 J miles, to within about a third of<br />

a mile of Karang Hadji, off Tanjong Kalian. It is composed of hard sand,<br />

and has several patches of 2^ and 3 fathoms water, and 4 or 5 fathoms<br />

between.<br />

A 2-fathoms patch liesN.W. by N. 2^ mUes from Amelia bank : Bukit<br />

Belu, bearing N. lay E. J E. which leads to the westward of Amelia bank,<br />

leads to the eastward of this patch.<br />

Prom this patch, others of 2J and 3 fathoms extend N.W. by W. for<br />

5 miles', this part of the bank being about 1^ miles wide. For 3 miles<br />

farther in the same- direction the banL has from 4|- to V fathoms, the<br />

deepest water appearing to be with Muntok fort flagstaff in line with the<br />

pier head, bearing ai)out N. by E. J E. ;<br />
