TRANSMISSION - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - Fig. 8<br />

REMOVAL<br />

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and raise<br />

the vehicle on a hoist.<br />

2. Remove the right rear wheel. Mark the<br />

adjustment position of the parking brake cable<br />

and disconnect the cable from the brake lever<br />

and the mounting bracket. Move the cable<br />

clear of the transmission.<br />

3. Disconnect the gear change tube from the<br />

bellcrank and the transmission. Remove the<br />

gear change tube.<br />

4. Support the transmission and remove the bolts<br />

securing the left and right transmission mount<br />

brackets to the mounts.<br />

5. Remove the mount brackets from the<br />

transmission end cover.<br />

6. Lower transmission and remove the retaining<br />

clip, washer and clevis pin securing the shift<br />

cable.<br />

7. Disconnect the shift cable mounting bracket<br />

from the end cover.<br />

8. Disconnect the wires from the back-up light<br />

switch.<br />

9. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line (plastic)<br />

from the union leaving the steel line connected<br />

to the union and the clutch slave cylinder.<br />

10. Remove the flywheel protection shield from<br />

the clutch housing.<br />

11. Disconnect the plate securing the magnetic<br />

timing pick-up on left side of the clutch<br />

housing.<br />

12. Remove the bolts securing the starter motor to<br />

the clutch housing and position starter out of<br />

the way.<br />

13. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to<br />

the engine.<br />

14. Using a suitable transmission jack, remove the<br />

transmission.<br />

NOTE: It is necessary to support the<br />

transmission and keep proper alignment<br />

between the engine and the transmission while<br />

separating the units.<br />

INSTALLATION<br />

NOTE: Engine/transmission pilot bearing should<br />

be replaced each time the transmission assembly is<br />

removed using Tool J23907.<br />

1. To complete installation, reverse the removal<br />

procedures. Torque fasteners to specifications.
