REASSEMBLY<br />

1. Install the outer bearing race in the left-hand<br />

half-casing using a brass drift.<br />

The race should be s/ightly recessed from the<br />

inside face of the case.<br />

2. Install the new O-r'ing and lip seal on the<br />

differential adjusting nut.<br />

3. Thread the nut into the case until it touches the<br />

bearing race.<br />

4. Install the outer bearing race in the right-hand<br />

half-case using a brass drift.<br />

Make sure that the race is firmly seated.<br />

5. Install the differential oil seal in the right-hand<br />

half-case.<br />

6. Fit the shim(s) and press the carrier bearing<br />

onto the differential case.<br />

NOTE: Use the same shim(s) that were<br />

removed during disassembly.<br />

7. Lubricate the thrust washer and side gear. Fit<br />

the gear and washer into case with the oil<br />

groove on the washer facing side gear.<br />

8. Fit the spider gears and the concave washers<br />

into the case. Install the spider gear shaft and<br />

retaining pin.<br />

9. Press the carrier bearing onto the ring gear.<br />

(Fig. 38)<br />

10. Lubricate the side gear and fit the gear into the<br />

ring gear.<br />

11. Install the ring gear on the case and torque<br />

tighten the bolts.<br />

NOTE: Use new self-locking bolts on the ring<br />

gear.<br />

12. Install new O-ring seals on the side gear shafts.<br />

GEARSHIFT CONTROLS<br />

DISASSEMBLY<br />

NOTE: Place the gearshift controls in the neutral<br />

position (all rod notches aligned) before<br />

proceeding to the next step.<br />

1. Remove the rollpins securing the 1st-2nd and<br />

shift fork and damping spring to its shift rod.<br />

Remove the rollpin securing the 3rd-4th shift<br />

fork to the shift rod.<br />

NOTE: The detent bails are spring loaded and<br />

will fly out when the shafts are removed. (Fig.<br />

39)<br />

2. Remove the 1st-2nd shift rod and withdraw the<br />

shaft from the fork spring and case. Extract the<br />

detent ball and spring.<br />

3. Rotate the 3rd-4th shift rod and remove the rod<br />

from fork and case.<br />

Extract the detent ball and spring.<br />

4. Remove the reverse gear locking bolt, securing<br />

the reverse shift fork.
