RADIATIoN PRtowzoN PRoGRA AND WAsTE MANAGEMENT<br />

Acceptance criteria for the radiation-protection program. include the following:<br />

The scope and conte-nt ofthe radiation protectio'n prougram sho-ul'd be<br />

dlearly based on a commitment of ailt management to protect the<br />

facility staf the environment, and the public from unacceptable exposure<br />

to radiation.<br />

* The facility organization chart should show that the management of the<br />

radiation protection prog'ram is inde'pend-ent o'fthe reactor operation's<br />

management.<br />

* The program should provide for compliance with all applicable regulations.<br />

* The program should show clearly that all review areas (discussed above)<br />

have been addressed and all expected radiation doses have been addressed.<br />

* The program procedures should establish and describe clear lines of<br />

repnibility and clear methods for radiation protectionudromaad<br />

emergency conditions.<br />

* Procedures should be organized and "presented for convenient use by'<br />

operators and technicians at the appropriate locations, and should be free<br />

of extraneous material. Supplementary or revised procedures should be<br />

issued when necessary to reflect radiation protection changees and<br />

impovements. Procedures should be periodically reiee bysupervisors<br />

and the review committee. New or revised procedures affectinfg radiation<br />

protection should be reviewed and approved by the ifadiatiori protection<br />

staff, appropriate management, and the review committee.<br />

* AM employees and visitors granted unescorted access to the facility should<br />

Ireceive training concerning the radiological health and protection pro'grami,<br />

commensurate with their job duties and functio ns, or purposes of their'.<br />

visits. Certified individuals, including -operators anid their supervisors,<br />

should be given classroom and on-the-job trinig in ra'diation control<br />

practices. Thbe radiation protection training program should be p'art of the<br />

,ongoing training program established and maintained by the facility to train<br />

-and requalify individuals as re-quired.<br />

* The review committee or committees resp~onsibli for radiation Prtection<br />

should report. to a level of management sufficiently" high to take any'<br />

necessary corrective action; should have clearly written charters that<br />

describe their purposes, functions, authority, responsibility, and<br />
