3 DESIGN OF STRUCTURES, SYSTEMS, AND<br />

COMPONENTS<br />

This chapter gives guidance for reviewing and evaluating the principal architectural<br />

and engineein'g 'design criteria for the structures, systems, and components that<br />

have been identified by the analyses in this and other chapters of the SAR to ensure<br />

reactor faciity safety and protection of the public. The bases of some design<br />

features may be developed and presented in other chapters of the SAR (e.g., the<br />

confinement or the containment, air exhaust stack, and environmental requirements<br />

for safety systems) and need only be'referenced in this chapter.<br />

3.1 Design Criteria-<br />

Areas of Review .. --<br />

Areas of review should include the criteria for the design and construction of the<br />

structures, systems, and components that are required to ensure the following:<br />

* safe reactor operation<br />

* safe reactor shutdown and continued safe conditions<br />

* response to anticipated transients<br />

a .response to potential accidents analyzed in Chapter 13, "Accident<br />

Analyses," of the SAR.<br />

* control of radioactive material discussed in Chapter 11, "Radiation<br />

Protection Program and Waste Management," of the SAR<br />

The acceptance criteria for the information on design criteria include the following:<br />

* Design criteria should be specified for each structure, system, and<br />

component that is assumed in the SAR to perform an operational or safety<br />

function.<br />

* Design criteria should include references to applicable up-to-date,<br />

standards, guides, and codes. They should be stipulated for those features<br />

discussed in the format and content guide for this section, as outlined<br />
