be seen <strong>in</strong> the example below:<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g an understand<strong>in</strong>g of respect for the tangata whenua and work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to honour the Treaty (R. 205).<br />

In Aotearoa New Zealand Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Whāriki and<br />

biculturalism, as has been noted by both the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education (1996, 1998)<br />

and Ritchie (2003) are <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed. A response from a Māori respondent which<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ked back to the importance of Te Tiriti was:<br />

Two cultures not one, cultural language, values, beliefs, practices,<br />

taonga; customs as a whole/holistic not part. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g my people<br />

hoped for with Te Tiriti o Waitangi (R. 102).<br />

With Te Tiriti o Waitangi be<strong>in</strong>g such a crucial document for the<br />

development of Tiriti-<strong>based</strong> <strong>curriculum</strong> was devised, I was <strong>in</strong>terested to discover<br />

how well respondents thought they understood it. They were asked, therefore, to<br />

self-rate their understand<strong>in</strong>g of Te Tiriti o Waitangi on a five-po<strong>in</strong>t scale with 1<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g the lowest (no understand<strong>in</strong>g) and 5 the highest (full understand<strong>in</strong>g). Table<br />

6.1 shows their responses.<br />

It would be fair to say that over three quarters of the respondents thought<br />

they had an average to good understand<strong>in</strong>g of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which is what<br />

underp<strong>in</strong>s the national <strong>curriculum</strong> Te Whāriki. Respondents most frequently rated<br />

themselves 3 (n=30 or 39%) or 4 (n=28 or 37%) for understand<strong>in</strong>g of Te Tiriti o<br />

Waitangi. Only one respondent said she had no understand<strong>in</strong>g, with 8% (n=6)<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g full understand<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its promise of partnership govern the relationship<br />

between Māori and the Crown. With partnership be<strong>in</strong>g one of the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Te<br />

Tiriti o Waitangi it not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that n<strong>early</strong> half the respondents (47%, n=36)<br />
