The Chiefs of the Confederation and all these chiefs<br />

who have not jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> that Confederation give up<br />

to the Queen of England for ever all the<br />

Governorship (Kawanatanga) of their lands.<br />

The Queen of England agrees and consents (to<br />

give) to the Chiefs, the Hapu, and all the people of<br />

New Zealand the full chiefta<strong>in</strong>ship<br />

(Rangatiratanga) over their lands, villages and all<br />

their possessions (taonga: everyth<strong>in</strong>g that is held<br />

precious. But the Chiefs of the Confederation and<br />

all the Chiefs give to the Queen the purchas<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

those pieces of land that the owner is will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

sell, subject to the arrang<strong>in</strong>g of payment that will<br />

be agreed to by them and the purchaser who will<br />

be appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the Queen for the purpose of<br />

buy<strong>in</strong>g for her.<br />
