<strong>and</strong> from printed ballad sheets <strong>and</strong> garl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

His first volume <strong>of</strong> The Tea- Table Miscellany<br />

was issued in 1724, three others following later.<br />

It is rather unfortunate, i'rom an antiquarian<br />

point <strong>of</strong> view, that Ramsay <strong>and</strong> his friends were<br />

not content to leave them as collected, but<br />

imparted to many a then fashionable artificial<br />

flavour, while boasting in his dedication <strong>of</strong> the<br />

charming simplicity <strong>of</strong> the Scotch ditties.<br />

In 1769 <strong>and</strong> 1776 David Herd rendered a<br />

more ti'ustworthy account <strong>of</strong> traditional Scots<br />

Song in the two volumes he published ; wliile<br />

Johnson's Scots Musical Miiseuw, <strong>of</strong> six hundred<br />

songs with the <strong>music</strong>, was the principal collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 18th century.<br />

The following list comprises all the important<br />

collections <strong>of</strong> Scotch National <strong>music</strong>,<br />

including some early manuscripts which contain<br />

Scottish airs.<br />

M<strong>and</strong>sckipts<br />

a. 1612-28. TheBowjiUan MS. In lute tablature on a six-line stave,<br />

50 pp. It belonged to, <strong>and</strong> was probably written by, Sir<br />

WiMam Mure <strong>of</strong> Sowallan, between, the dates 1612 <strong>and</strong><br />

1628. It contains several Scottish alra, <strong>and</strong> is in t^e<br />

library <strong>of</strong> the Edinburgh "University.<br />

w, 1627-29. The Straloch MS. In lute tablature on a six-line stave.<br />

Contained Scottish <strong>and</strong> other airs. The original manuscript<br />

is now lost, but a copy <strong>of</strong> a portion <strong>of</strong> it was made<br />

by G. F. Graham, <strong>and</strong> is in the Advocates' Library;<br />

Bdinbnrgb (see Straloch MS.).<br />

16 ? The Skene MS. In tablature on a four-line, stave. In<br />

the Advocates' Library (see Skekb MS.).<br />

c. 1675-80. The Guthrie MS. In tablature, contains a number <strong>of</strong><br />

Scottish airs or rather, as the late Mr. Glen pointed<br />

out, accompanimenta for them. In the Edinburgh<br />

University.<br />

1683-92. The Blaikie MSS. These two, in tablature for tiie viol, da<br />

gamba, belonged to Andrew Blaikie <strong>of</strong> Paisley, a <strong>music</strong>engraver,<br />

early in the 19th century. They bore dates as<br />

in the mai^n, but both manuscripts are now lost. Transcripls<br />

<strong>of</strong> portions <strong>of</strong> them are in the Wighton Library,<br />

Dundee.<br />

16-^? The Leyden MS. In tablature for the Lyra Viol. It<br />

belonged to Dr. John Leyden <strong>and</strong> is now lost. A transcript<br />

made by G. F. Graham is in the Advocates' Library.<br />

The contents are much the same as one <strong>of</strong> the Blaikie<br />

MSS. <strong>and</strong> is apparently <strong>of</strong> the same date. Another<br />

Leyden MS. is in the Advocates' Library, dated 1639, but<br />

this does not appear to contain Scottish airs.<br />

1704. Agnes Hume's MS. dated 1704. In the Advocates' Library,<br />

ordinary notation.<br />

1709. Mrs. Crockat's MS. Befetred to by Stenhouse who once<br />

possessed it ; it is said to have been dated 1709, but it is<br />

now lost.<br />

1710. Margaret Sinkler's MS. An oblong qiurto volume <strong>of</strong> about<br />

a hundred airs, which formerly belonged to the late Mr.<br />

John Glen. It bears the date 1710, <strong>and</strong> is in ordinary<br />

notation.<br />

1723-24. Gumming MS. A small volume <strong>of</strong> airs for the violin,<br />

dated 1723 on first leaf, <strong>and</strong> 1724 on last, with the name<br />

<strong>of</strong> its original compUer,<br />

It {Contains a number <strong>of</strong> Scotch airs, up to its (&te<br />

Many Scots <strong>and</strong> Anglo-ScottiRh airs appear in Flayford's<br />

'Dancing Master' 1650-1728, <strong>and</strong> other <strong>of</strong> Playford's<br />

1698-1720. At later dates a great number are also to be<br />

found in the London country-dance books <strong>of</strong> various<br />

publishers.<br />

83 such. There appears to be only one copy <strong>of</strong> each in<br />

existence. Mr. Inglis <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh holds the 1700 edition,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the British Museum Library tiie second edition. The<br />

work is printed from movable type.)<br />
