Gumbert <strong>of</strong> the Gew<strong>and</strong>haus orchestra. In<br />

Leipzig he belonged to the coterie <strong>of</strong> Liszt<br />

champions <strong>of</strong> which men like Siloti, Friedheim,<br />

Dayas, <strong>and</strong> Krausewere members, <strong>and</strong> frequently<br />

visited that master in "Weimar. From 1886 to<br />

1889 he lived in associating much<br />

with his friend <strong>and</strong> fellow-countryman Mac-<br />

Dowell, <strong>and</strong> falling under the influence <strong>of</strong> Raff.<br />

He then took up a residence in Vevey, Switzerl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

where he still lives, having spent one year<br />

(1891-92) in the United States as teacher at<br />

the New Engl<strong>and</strong> Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Music in<br />

Boston. In Vevey he turned his thoughts for<br />

a time to water-colour painting, <strong>and</strong> founded<br />

the SoeUti Vaudoise des Aquarellistes, having<br />

become discouraged by the failure <strong>of</strong> American<br />

composers to find recognition in their native<br />

l<strong>and</strong>. Of Mr. Strong's published pieces the<br />

most important are two for soli, male cborus,<br />

<strong>and</strong> orchestra : Wie ein fahrender Hornist sich<br />

ein L<strong>and</strong> erblies,' op. 26, <strong>and</strong> Die ' verlassene<br />

Miihle,' op. 30, <strong>and</strong> a symphony entitled 'Sintram,'<br />

based on de la Motte Fouqu^'s romance<br />

as well as a Choralvorspiel, are in MS. in Berlin.<br />

In the Wolfenbiittel Library is an autograph<br />

MS. <strong>of</strong> <strong>music</strong> for five voice <strong>and</strong> eight instrumental<br />

parts, composed in June 1671, 'Musikalischer<br />

Gliickwunschender Zuruff (Kommt und<br />

sehet die Wercke des Herrn) als . . . Rudolphus<br />

Augustus, Herzog zu Braunschweig und Liineburg<br />

in der Erbhuldigungsstadt Braunschweig<br />

den Gottesdienst in der Kirchen zum Briidem<br />

erstesniahls beigewolmt. ' His son,<br />

Nicolas Adam Strxtkgk, or Strunck, was<br />

born at Celle in November 1640. He studied<br />

<strong>music</strong> with his father, Delphin Strungk, <strong>and</strong><br />

at the age <strong>of</strong> twelve was acting as organist<br />

at the Magnuskirche, Brunswick. Later he<br />

entered Helmstadt University, <strong>and</strong> worked there<br />

for some years, taking violin lessons in tJie<br />

vacations from Schnittelbach <strong>of</strong> Liibeck. In<br />

1660 he was appointed first violin in the<br />

Wolfenbiittel H<strong>of</strong>kapelle, but changed subsequently<br />

to a similar post at Celle, with a yearly<br />

salary <strong>of</strong> 200 thalers. In 1665 he joined the<br />

H<strong>of</strong>kapelle <strong>of</strong> the Elector Johann Friedrich <strong>of</strong><br />

Hanover.<br />

About this time he paid his first visit to<br />

<strong>and</strong> a symphony ' In den Bergen ' have been Leopold I. In 1678 he was appointed director<br />

successfully played at home <strong>and</strong> abroad. A <strong>of</strong> <strong>music</strong> in Hamburg, where a great effort was<br />

considerable number <strong>of</strong> cliamber <strong>music</strong>-pieces, being made to foster German <strong>music</strong>al talent, so<br />

two American Sketches ' ' for violin solo <strong>and</strong> orchestra,<br />

long overshadowed by Italian influences. There<br />

a short dtamatic cantata, arrangements he wrote <strong>and</strong> produced many operas : Der<br />

'<br />

for four h<strong>and</strong>s pian<strong>of</strong>orte <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> Bach's gliickselig-steigende Sejanus, ' <strong>and</strong> Der ungliicklich<br />

' organ works, songs, instrumental solos, etc.,<br />

- fallende Sejanus' in 1678, the German<br />

' remain in manusciipt.<br />

STROUD, Charles, born about 1705, was the Italian <strong>of</strong> Nicola Minato<br />

educated as a chorister <strong>of</strong> the Chapel Royal Tochter Cecrops,' ' Doris,' <strong>and</strong> ' Alceste ' in 1680;<br />

under Dr. Cr<strong>of</strong>t. After quitting the choir he<br />

<strong>and</strong> ' Floretto in 1683.<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficiated as deputy organist for his instructor Friederich Wilhelm <strong>of</strong> Br<strong>and</strong>enburg, when<br />

<strong>and</strong> became organist <strong>of</strong> Whitehall Chapel. He visiting Hamburg, tried to secure Strungk's services<br />

died April 26, 1726, <strong>and</strong> was buried in the west<br />

as capellmeister, but this was not allowed,<br />

cloister <strong>of</strong> Westminster Abbey. He is known Hanover having a prior claim. The Elector<br />

as a composer by his beautiful anthem, Hear<br />

' Ernst August appointed Strungk chamber organist,<br />

my prayer, God,' included in Page's Harmonia<br />

<strong>and</strong> presented him to a canonry at<br />

Sacra.' w. H. H. Einbeck, <strong>and</strong> eventually Strungk accompanied<br />

STRUNGK, Delphin, was bom 1601, <strong>and</strong> him to Italy <strong>and</strong> remained there some time. It<br />

died 1694 at Brunswick. He was a capable was at Rome that the meeting between Strungk<br />

organist, <strong>and</strong> held posts successively at the <strong>and</strong> Corelli took place, so graphically described<br />

Wolfenbiittel Hauptkirche, 1630-32 ;<br />

at Celle, by Hawkins (ed. 1875, vol. ii. p. 676). Strungk<br />

<strong>and</strong> at the church <strong>of</strong> St. Martin, Bninswick. again visited Vienna, this time playing on the<br />

Strungk composed <strong>music</strong> for the organ—an He was the successor <strong>of</strong> Carlo Pallavicini, who<br />

example is printed in Ritter's GescMchte des died on Jan. 29, leaving an unfinished opera<br />

Orgelspiels, 1884, ii. 207, a Choralvorspiel in which Strungk was asked to complete. The<br />

4-part writing ' Lass mich dein sein Dr. Max libretto was by Pallavioini's son Stefano.<br />

Seiffert {jublished two more. In a Liineburg Strungk apparently contributed the <strong>music</strong> to the<br />

MS. there are six <strong>of</strong> these organ arrangements third act, <strong>and</strong> the opera, L'Antiope, ' ' was performed<br />

four times in Feb. 1689, at Dresden.<br />
