errors with six out <strong>of</strong> the 20 new words. Qualitatively the characteristics <strong>of</strong> her<br />

spell<strong>in</strong>g errors for the new words differed from basel<strong>in</strong>e errors. Basel<strong>in</strong>e errors<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded, for example, target – SMOKE, response = SLODGE, target –<br />

CHURSE, response = JARHA, whereas spell<strong>in</strong>g errors for the new words were<br />

considered to be closer to the target word, for example, target – HAMEKIN,<br />

response = HAMKIN, target – YAMTORK, response = YAMOCK, target –<br />

WANGOR, response = WANGOL. So while it was predicted that C3 would make<br />

spell<strong>in</strong>g errors on the new words (see section 5.8.1.3) she made no spell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

errors on 14 <strong>of</strong> the new words and the errors that were made for the other six<br />

words were similar to the target words suggest<strong>in</strong>g that these words were be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

stored as real words.<br />
