Trade Essentials<br />

For the purpose of this Guide, intervention refers to a tradespecific<br />

Essential Skills program delivered to either a group<br />

or an individual.<br />

A person who holds a Certificate of Qualification in a<br />

designated trade. A certified journeyperson is allowed to<br />

train and mentor apprentices.<br />

A seal of endorsement applied to a Certification of<br />

Qualification for a trade. It allows for mobility among<br />

provinces and territories. A certified journeyperson is<br />

allowed to train and mentor apprentices.<br />

A three-year research project to develop Essential Skills and<br />

Prior Learning assessments and curricula specific to 13<br />

trades and to pilot the materials with six of those trades.<br />

The 13 trades included in this project were: Automotive<br />

Service Technician, Carpenter, Cabinetmaker, <strong>Cook</strong>,<br />

Construction Electrician, Industrial Electrician, Machinist,<br />

Metal Fabricator, Oil Burner Mechanic, Plumber,<br />

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic,<br />

Steamfitter/Pipefitter and Welder. Materials were piloted<br />

with Carpenters, Steamfitter/Pipefitters, Welders,<br />

Automotive Service Technicians, Plumbers and <strong>Cook</strong>s.<br />
