(<strong>JP</strong> 6-0)friendly — A contact positively identified as friendly.friendly fire — In casualty reporting, a casualty circumstance applicable to persons killed inaction or wounded in action mistakenly or accidentally by friendly forces activelyengaged with the enemy, who are directing fire at a hostile force or what is thought tobe a hostile force. See also casualty.friendly force information requirement — Information the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> staff need tounderst<strong>and</strong> the status <strong>of</strong> friendly force <strong>and</strong> supporting capabilities. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-0)functional component comm<strong>and</strong> — A comm<strong>and</strong> normally, but not necessarily, composed<strong>of</strong> forces <strong>of</strong> two or more <strong>Military</strong> Departments which may be established across therange <strong>of</strong> military operations to perform particular operational missions that may be <strong>of</strong>short duration or may extend over a period <strong>of</strong> time. (<strong>JP</strong> 1)functional damage assessment — The estimate <strong>of</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong> military force to degrade ordestroy the functional or operational capability <strong>of</strong> the target to perform its intendedmission <strong>and</strong> on the level <strong>of</strong> success in achieving operational objectives establishedagainst the target. This assessment is based upon all-source information, <strong>and</strong> includesan estimation <strong>of</strong> the time required for recuperation or replacement <strong>of</strong> the targetfunction. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-60)functions — The appropriate or assigned duties, responsibilities, missions, or tasks <strong>of</strong> anindividual, <strong>of</strong>fice, or organization.
