As Amended Through 15 March 2012transportation, health services, <strong>and</strong> other services required by aviation <strong>and</strong> groundcombat troops to permit those units to accomplish their missions in combat. Combatservice support encompasses those activities at all levels <strong>of</strong> war that producesustainment to all operating forces on the battlefield. Also called CSS. See alsocombat support. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-0)combat service support area — An area ashore that is organized to contain the necessarysupplies, equipment, installations, <strong>and</strong> elements to provide the l<strong>and</strong>ing force withcombat service support throughout the operation. Also called CSSA. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-<strong>02</strong>)combat service support elements — Those elements whose primary missions are toprovide service support to combat forces <strong>and</strong> which are a part, or prepared to become apart, <strong>of</strong> a theater, comm<strong>and</strong>, or task force formed for combat operations. See alsoservice troops.combat spread loading — A method <strong>of</strong> combat loading by which some <strong>of</strong> the troops,equipment, <strong>and</strong> initial supplies <strong>of</strong> a unit are loaded in one ship <strong>and</strong> the remainder areloaded in one or more others. This method is commonly used for troop units withheavy equipment. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-0)combat support agency — A Department <strong>of</strong> Defense agency so designated by Congress orthe Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense that supports military combat operations. Also called CSA.(<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)combat surveillance — A continuous, all-weather, day-<strong>and</strong>-night, systematic watch overthe battle area in order to provide timely information for tactical combat operations.combat survival — Those measures to be taken by Service personnel when involuntarilyseparated from friendly forces in combat, including procedures relating to individualsurvival, evasion, escape, <strong>and</strong> conduct after capture. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-50)combat unit loading — A method <strong>of</strong> loading by which all or a part <strong>of</strong> a combat unit, suchas an assault battalion l<strong>and</strong>ing team, is completely loaded in a single ship, with essentialcombat equipment <strong>and</strong> supplies, in such a manner as to be immediately available tosupport the tactical plan upon debarkation, <strong>and</strong> to provide a maximum <strong>of</strong> flexibility tomeet possible changes in the tactical plan.
