A unit, organization, or installation performing a function or mission. 2. Afunction, mission, action, or collection <strong>of</strong> actions. Also called ACT. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-0)act <strong>of</strong> mercy — In personnel recovery, assistance rendered to evaders by an individual orelements <strong>of</strong> the local population who sympathize or empathize with the evaders’ causeor plight. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-50)actual ground zero — (*) The point on the surface <strong>of</strong> the Earth at, or vertically below orabove, the center <strong>of</strong> an actual nuclear detonation. See also ground zero.acute care services — Medical services provided for patients with conditions that generallyhave a rapid onset <strong>and</strong> follow a short course or require immediate attention. Mostbattlefield care rendered after wounding, illness, or injury onset is acute care service.Acute care service is delivered after the onset <strong>of</strong> symptoms, which differentiates it frompreventive care that is delivered before symptoms appear. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-<strong>02</strong>)acute radiation dose — Total ionizing radiation dose received at one time <strong>and</strong> over aperiod so short that biological recovery cannot occur. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-11)acute radiation syndrome — An acute illness caused by irradiation <strong>of</strong> the body by a highdose <strong>of</strong> penetrating radiation in a very short period <strong>of</strong> time. Also called ARS. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-11)Adaptive Planning <strong>and</strong> Execution system — A Department <strong>of</strong> Defense system <strong>of</strong> jointpolicies, processes, procedures, <strong>and</strong> reporting structures, supported by communications<strong>and</strong> information technology, that is used by the joint planning <strong>and</strong> executioncommunity to monitor, plan, <strong>and</strong> execute mobilization, deployment, employment,sustainment, redeployment, <strong>and</strong> demobilization activities associated with jointoperations. Also called APEX system. (<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)adequacy — The joint operation plan review criterion for assessing whether the scope <strong>and</strong>concept <strong>of</strong> planned operations can accomplish the assigned mission <strong>and</strong> comply withthe planning guidance provided. (<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)adjust — An order to the observer or spotter to initiate an adjustment on a designated target.<strong>JP</strong> 1-<strong>02</strong> 3
