As Amended Through 15 March 2012air interception — To effect visual or electronic contact by a friendly aircraft with anotheraircraft. Normally, the air intercept is conducted in the following five phases: a. climbphase — Airborne to cruising altitude. b. maneuver phase — Receipt <strong>of</strong> initial vectorto target until beginning transition to attack speed <strong>and</strong> altitude. c. transition phase —Increase or decrease <strong>of</strong> speed <strong>and</strong> altitude required for the attack. d. attack phase —Turn to attack heading, acquire target, complete attack, <strong>and</strong> turn to breakaway heading.e. recovery phase — Breakaway to l<strong>and</strong>ing. See also close-controlled airinterception.air interdiction — Air operations conducted to divert, disrupt, delay, or destroy theenemy’s military surface capabilities before it can be brought to bear effectively againstfriendly forces, or to otherwise achieve objectives that are conducted at such distancesfrom friendly forces that detailed integration <strong>of</strong> each air mission with the fire <strong>and</strong>movement <strong>of</strong> friendly forces is not required. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-03)airl<strong>and</strong> — Move by air <strong>and</strong> disembark, or unload, after the aircraft has l<strong>and</strong>ed or while anaircraft is hovering. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-17)air-launched ballistic missile — A ballistic missile launched from an airborne vehicle.air liaison <strong>of</strong>ficer — The senior tactical air control party member attached to a ground unitwho functions as the primary advisor to the ground comm<strong>and</strong>er on air power. An airliaison <strong>of</strong>ficer is usually an aeronautically rated <strong>of</strong>ficer. Also called ALO. See alsoliaison. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-09.3)airlift capability — The total capacity expressed in terms <strong>of</strong> number <strong>of</strong> passengers <strong>and</strong>/orweight/cubic displacement <strong>of</strong> cargo that can be carried at any one time to a givendestination by available airlift. See also airlift requirement. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-17)airlift control team — A cell within the joint air operations center <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the core teamsin the air mobility division. The airlift control team brings intratheater airlift functionalexpertise from the theater organizations to plan, coordinate, manage, <strong>and</strong> executeintratheater airlift operations in the area <strong>of</strong> responsibility <strong>and</strong> joint operations area for thejoint force air component comm<strong>and</strong>er. United States Transportation Comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> AirMobility Comm<strong>and</strong> may augment the airlift control team with intratheater airliftexpertise. These two sources <strong>of</strong> airlift expertise integrate into a single airlift controlteam within the air mobility division. Also called ALCT.
