Measures taken by a military unit, activity, or installation to protect itselfagainst all acts designed to, or which may, impair its effectiveness. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-10) 2. Acondition that results from the establishment <strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> protective measuresthat ensure a state <strong>of</strong> inviolability from hostile acts or influences. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-10) 3. Withrespect to classified matter, the condition that prevents unauthorized persons fromhaving access to <strong>of</strong>ficial information that is safeguarded in the interests <strong>of</strong> nationalsecurity. (<strong>JP</strong> 2-0)security assistance — Group <strong>of</strong> programs authorized by the Foreign Assistance Act <strong>of</strong>1961, as amended, <strong>and</strong> the Arms Export Control Act <strong>of</strong> 1976, as amended, or otherrelated statutes by which the United States provides defense articles, military training,<strong>and</strong> other defense-related services by grant, loan, credit, or cash sales in furtherance <strong>of</strong>national policies <strong>and</strong> objectives. Security assistance is an element <strong>of</strong> securitycooperation funded <strong>and</strong> authorized by Department <strong>of</strong> State to be administered byDepartment <strong>of</strong> Defense/Defense Security Cooperation Agency. Also called SA. Seealso security cooperation. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-22)security classification — A category to which national security information <strong>and</strong> material isassigned to denote the degree <strong>of</strong> damage that unauthorized disclosure would cause tonational defense or foreign relations <strong>of</strong> the United States <strong>and</strong> to denote the degree <strong>of</strong>protection required. There are three such categories: top secret, secret, <strong>and</strong>confidential. See also classification; security. (EO 13526)security clearance — An administrative determination by competent authority that anindividual is eligible for access to classified information. (<strong>JP</strong> 1-0)security cooperation — All Department <strong>of</strong> Defense interactions with foreign defenseestablishments to build defense relationships that promote specific US securityinterests, develop allied <strong>and</strong> friendly military capabilities for self-defense <strong>and</strong>multinational operations, <strong>and</strong> provide US forces with peacetime <strong>and</strong> contingencyaccess to a host nation. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-22)security cooperation organization — All Department <strong>of</strong> Defense elements located in aforeign country with assigned responsibilities for carrying out securityassistance/cooperation management functions. It includes military assistanceadvisory groups, military missions <strong>and</strong> groups, <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> defense <strong>and</strong> militarycooperation, liaison groups, <strong>and</strong> defense attaché personnel designated to performsecurity assistance/cooperation functions. Also called SCO. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-22)security countermeasures — Those protective activities required to prevent espionage,sabotage, theft, or unauthorized use <strong>of</strong> classified or controlled information, systems, ormaterial <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense.
