(<strong>DOD</strong> only) It is designed to reduce reactiontime <strong>and</strong> to increase survivability. See also combat air patrol; ground alert.airborne assault — See assault phase.airborne early warning — The detection <strong>of</strong> enemy air or surface units by radar or otherequipment carried in an airborne vehicle, <strong>and</strong> the transmitting <strong>of</strong> a warning to friendlyunits. Also called AEW. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-52)airborne early warning <strong>and</strong> control — (*) Air surveillance <strong>and</strong> control provided byairborne early warning aircraft which are equipped with search <strong>and</strong> height-finding radar<strong>and</strong> communications equipment for controlling weapon systems. Also called AEW & C.airborne lift — The total capacities expressed in terms <strong>of</strong> personnel <strong>and</strong> cargo that are, orcan be, carried by available aircraft in one trip.airborne mission coordinator — The designated individual that serves as an airborneextension <strong>of</strong> the component comm<strong>and</strong>er or supported comm<strong>and</strong>er responsible for thepersonnel recovery mission. Also called AMC. See also combat search <strong>and</strong> rescue;combat search <strong>and</strong> rescue task force; personnel recovery coordination cell.(<strong>JP</strong> 3-50)airborne operation — An operation involving the air movement into an objective area <strong>of</strong>combat forces <strong>and</strong> their logistic support for execution <strong>of</strong> a tactical, operational, orstrategic mission. The means employed may be any combination <strong>of</strong> airborne units, airtransportable units, <strong>and</strong> types <strong>of</strong> transport aircraft, depending on the mission <strong>and</strong> theoverall situation. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-18)airborne troops — Those ground units whose primary mission is to make assault l<strong>and</strong>ingsfrom the air.air-breathing missile — A missile with an engine requiring the intake <strong>of</strong> air for combustion<strong>of</strong> its fuel, as in a ramjet or turbojet. To be contrasted with the rocket missile, whichcarries its own oxidizer <strong>and</strong> can operate beyond the atmosphere.air-capable ship — A ship other than aircraft carrier; aircraft carrier, nuclear; amphibiousassault ship, l<strong>and</strong>ing platform helicopter; general purpose amphibious assault ship; orgeneral purpose amphibious assault ship (with internal dock) from which aircraft cantake <strong>of</strong>f, be recovered, or routinely receive <strong>and</strong> transfer logistic support.
