(<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)crisis management — Measures to identify, acquire, <strong>and</strong> plan the use <strong>of</strong> resources neededto anticipate, prevent, <strong>and</strong>/or resolve a threat or an act <strong>of</strong> terrorism. It is predominantlya law enforcement response, normally executed under federal law. Also called CrM.(<strong>JP</strong> 3-28)critical asset — A specific entity that is <strong>of</strong> such extraordinary importance that itsincapacitation or destruction would have a very serious, debilitating effect on the ability<strong>of</strong> a nation to continue to function effectively. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-07.2)critical asset list — A prioritized list <strong>of</strong> assets, normally identified by phase <strong>of</strong> the operation<strong>and</strong> approved by the joint force comm<strong>and</strong>er, that should be defended against air <strong>and</strong>missile threats. Also called the CAL. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-01)critical capability — A means that is considered a crucial enabler for a center <strong>of</strong> gravity t<strong>of</strong>unction as such <strong>and</strong> is essential to the accomplishment <strong>of</strong> the specified or assumedobjective(s). (<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)critical information — Specific facts about friendly intentions, capabilities, <strong>and</strong> activitiesvitally needed by adversaries for them to plan <strong>and</strong> act effectively so as to guaranteefailure or unacceptable consequences for friendly mission accomplishment. (<strong>JP</strong> 2-0)critical infrastructure protection — Actions taken to prevent, remediate, or mitigate therisks resulting from vulnerabilities <strong>of</strong> critical infrastructure assets. Depending on therisk, these actions could include: changes in tactics, techniques, or procedures; addingredundancy; selection <strong>of</strong> another asset; isolation or hardening; guarding, etc. Alsocalled CIP. See also defense critical infrastructure; national critical infrastructure<strong>and</strong> key assets. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-28)critical intelligence — Intelligence that is crucial <strong>and</strong> requires the immediate attention <strong>of</strong>the comm<strong>and</strong>er. It is required to enable the comm<strong>and</strong>er to make decisions that willprovide a timely <strong>and</strong> appropriate response to actions by the potential or actual enemy.It includes but is not limited to the following: a. strong indications <strong>of</strong> the imminentoutbreak <strong>of</strong> hostilities <strong>of</strong> any type (warning <strong>of</strong> attack); b. aggression <strong>of</strong> any natureagainst a friendly country; c. indications or use <strong>of</strong> chemical, biological, radiological,nuclear, or high-yield explosives weapons; <strong>and</strong> d. significant events within adversarycountries that may lead to modifications <strong>of</strong> nuclear strike plans. (<strong>JP</strong> 2-0)critical item — An essential item which is in short supply or expected to be in short supplyfor an extended period. See also critical supplies <strong>and</strong> materiel.critical item list — Prioritized list, compiled from a subordinate comm<strong>and</strong>er’s compositecritical item lists, identifying supply items <strong>and</strong> weapon systems that assist Service <strong>and</strong>Defense Logistics Agency’s selection <strong>of</strong> supply items <strong>and</strong> systems for production surge80 <strong>JP</strong> 1-<strong>02</strong>
