As Amended Through 15 March 2012common-user military l<strong>and</strong> transportation — Point-to-point l<strong>and</strong> transportation serviceoperated by a single Service for common use by two or more Services.common-user network — A system <strong>of</strong> circuits or channels allocated to furnishcommunication paths between switching centers to provide communication service ona common basis to all connected stations or subscribers. It is sometimes described as ageneral purpose network.common-user ocean terminals — A military installation, part <strong>of</strong> a military installation, or acommercial facility operated under contract or arrangement by the Surface Deployment<strong>and</strong> Distribution Comm<strong>and</strong> which regularly provides for two or more Services terminalfunctions <strong>of</strong> receipt, transit storage or staging, processing, <strong>and</strong> loading <strong>and</strong> unloading <strong>of</strong>passengers or cargo aboard ships. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-01.2)common-user sealift — The sealift services provided on a common basis for allDepartment <strong>of</strong> Defense agencies <strong>and</strong>, as authorized, for other agencies <strong>of</strong> the USGovernment. The <strong>Military</strong> Sealift Comm<strong>and</strong>, a transportation component comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>the US Transportation Comm<strong>and</strong>, provides common-user sealift for which usersreimburse the transportation accounts <strong>of</strong> the Transportation Working Capital Fund. Seealso <strong>Military</strong> Sealift Comm<strong>and</strong>; transportation component comm<strong>and</strong>. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-35)common-user transportation — Transportation <strong>and</strong> transportation services provided on acommon basis for two or more Department <strong>of</strong> Defense agencies <strong>and</strong>, as authorized,non-Department <strong>of</strong> Defense agencies. Common-user assets are under the combatantcomm<strong>and</strong> (comm<strong>and</strong> authority) <strong>of</strong> Comm<strong>and</strong>er, United States TransportationComm<strong>and</strong>, excluding Service-organic or theater-assigned transportation assets. Seealso common use. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-01.2)communicate — To use any means or method to convey information <strong>of</strong> any kind from oneperson or place to another. (<strong>JP</strong> 6-0)communications intelligence — Technical information <strong>and</strong> intelligence derived fromforeign communications by other than the intended recipients. Also called COMINT.(<strong>JP</strong> 2-0)communications network — An organization <strong>of</strong> stations capable <strong>of</strong> intercommunications,but not necessarily on the same channel. (<strong>JP</strong> 6-0)communications satellite — An orbiting vehicle, which relays signals betweencommunications stations. There are two types: a. active communications satellite —A satellite that receives, regenerates, <strong>and</strong> retransmits signals between stations; b.passive communications satellite — A satellite which reflects communicationssignals between stations. Also called COMSAT. (<strong>JP</strong> 6-0)communications security — The protection resulting from all measures designed to denyunauthorized persons information <strong>of</strong> value that might be derived from the possession <strong>and</strong><strong>JP</strong> 1-<strong>02</strong> 63
