As Amended Through 15 March 2012containership — A ship specially constructed <strong>and</strong> equipped to carry only containerswithout associated equipment, in all available cargo spaces, either below or above deck.Containerships are usually non-self-sustaining, do not have built-in capability to load or<strong>of</strong>f-load containers, <strong>and</strong> require port crane service. A containership with shipboardinstalledcranes capable <strong>of</strong> loading <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-loading containers without assistance <strong>of</strong> portcrane service is considered self-sustaining. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-09)containership cargo stowage adapter — Serves as the bottom-most temporary deck <strong>and</strong>precludes the necessity <strong>of</strong> strengthening <strong>of</strong> tank tops or the installation <strong>of</strong> hard pointson decks, thereby accelerating containership readiness. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-01.6)contaminated remains — Remains <strong>of</strong> personnel which have absorbed or upon which havebeen deposited radioactive material, or biological or chemical agents. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-11)contamination control — A combination <strong>of</strong> preparatory <strong>and</strong> responsive measures designedto limit the vulnerability <strong>of</strong> forces to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, <strong>and</strong> toxicindustrial hazards <strong>and</strong> to avoid, contain, control exposure to, <strong>and</strong>, where possible,neutralize them. A maritime zone adjacent to the territorial sea that may not extendbeyond 24 nautical miles (nms) from the baselines from which the breadth <strong>of</strong> theterritorial sea is measured. Within the contiguous zone the coastal state may exercisethe control necessary to prevent <strong>and</strong> punish infringement <strong>of</strong> its customs, fiscal,immigration, or sanitary laws <strong>and</strong> regulations within its territory or territorial sea. In allother respects the contiguous zone is an area subject to high seas freedom <strong>of</strong>navigation, overflight, <strong>and</strong> related freedoms, such as the conduct <strong>of</strong> military exercises.2.
