In l<strong>and</strong> warfare, an area <strong>of</strong> ground containing mines emplaced with orwithout a pattern. 2. In naval warfare, an area <strong>of</strong> water containing mines emplaced withor without a pattern. See also mine; mine warfare. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)minefield record — A complete written record <strong>of</strong> all pertinent information concerning aminefield, submitted on a st<strong>and</strong>ard form by the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge <strong>of</strong> the emplacementoperations. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)minefield report — An oral, electronic, or written communication concerning miningactivities (friendly or enemy) submitted in a st<strong>and</strong>ard format by the fastest securemeans available. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)minehunting — Employment <strong>of</strong> sensor <strong>and</strong> neutralization systems, whether air, surface, orsubsurface, to locate <strong>and</strong> dispose <strong>of</strong> individual mines in a known field, or to verify thepresence or absence <strong>of</strong> mines in a given area. See also minesweeping. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)minesweeping — The technique <strong>of</strong> clearing mines using either mechanical sweeping toremove, disturb, or otherwise neutralize the mine; explosive sweeping to causesympathetic detonations, damage, or displace the mine; or influence sweeping toproduce either the acoustic or magnetic influence required to detonate the mine. Seealso minehunting. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)mine warfare — The strategic, operational, <strong>and</strong> tactical use <strong>of</strong> mines <strong>and</strong> minecountermeasures either by emplacing mines to degrade the enemy’s capabilities to wagel<strong>and</strong>, air, <strong>and</strong> maritime warfare or by countering <strong>of</strong> enemy-emplaced mines to permitfriendly maneuver or use <strong>of</strong> selected l<strong>and</strong> or sea areas. Also called MW. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)minimize — A condition wherein normal message <strong>and</strong> telephone traffic is drasticallyreduced in order that messages connected with an actual or simulated emergency shallnot be delayed. (<strong>JP</strong> 6-0)minimum force — Those minimum actions, including the use <strong>of</strong> armed force, sufficient tobring a situation under control or to defend against hostile act or hostile intent. Allactions must cease as soon as the target complies with instructions or ceases hostileaction. The firing <strong>of</strong> weapons is to be considered as a means <strong>of</strong> last resort.minimum obstruction clearance altitude — The specified altitude in effect between radi<strong>of</strong>ixes on very high frequency omnirange airways, <strong>of</strong>f-airway routes, or route segments,which meets obstruction clearance requirements for the entire route segment, <strong>and</strong> thatassures acceptable navigational signal coverage only within 22 miles <strong>of</strong> a very highfrequency omnirange.212 <strong>JP</strong> 1-<strong>02</strong>
