(<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)objective area — A defined geographical area within which is located an objective to becaptured or reached by the military forces. This area is defined by competent authorityfor purposes <strong>of</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control. Also called OA. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-06)observer-target range — The distance along an imaginary straight line from the observeror spotter to the target.obstacle — Any natural or man-made obstruction designed or employed to disrupt, fix, turn,or block the movement <strong>of</strong> an opposing force, <strong>and</strong> to impose additional losses inpersonnel, time, <strong>and</strong> equipment on the opposing force. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)obstacle belt — A brigade-level comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control measure, normally givengraphically, to show where within an obstacle zone the ground tactical comm<strong>and</strong>erplans to limit friendly obstacle employment <strong>and</strong> focus the defense. See also obstacle.(<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)obstacle clearing — The total elimination or neutralization <strong>of</strong> obstacles. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)obstacle intelligence — Those collection efforts to detect the presence <strong>of</strong> enemy <strong>and</strong> naturalobstacles, determine their types <strong>and</strong> dimensions, <strong>and</strong> provide the necessary informationto plan appropriate combined arms breaching, clearance, or bypass operations to negatethe impact on the friendly scheme <strong>of</strong> maneuver. Also called OBSTINT. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)obstacle restricted areas — A comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control measure used to limit the type ornumber <strong>of</strong> obstacles within an area. See also obstacle. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)obstacle zone — A division-level comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control measure, normally donegraphically, to designate specific l<strong>and</strong> areas where lower echelons are allowed toemploy tactical obstacles. See also obstacle. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-15)occupational <strong>and</strong> environmental health surveillance — The regular or repeatedcollection, analysis, archiving, interpretation, <strong>and</strong> dissemination <strong>of</strong> occupational <strong>and</strong>environmental health-related data for monitoring the health <strong>of</strong>, or potential healthhazard impact on, a population <strong>and</strong> individual personnel, <strong>and</strong> for intervening in a timelymanner to prevent, treat, or control the occurrence <strong>of</strong> disease or injury when determinednecessary. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-<strong>02</strong>)occupational <strong>and</strong> environmental health threats — Threats to the health <strong>of</strong> military personnel<strong>and</strong> to military readiness created by exposure to hazardous agents, environmentalcontamination, or toxic industrial materials.
