(<strong>JP</strong> 5-0)short-range air defense engagement zone — In air defense, that airspace <strong>of</strong> defineddimensions within which the responsibility for engagement <strong>of</strong> air threats normally restswith short-range air defense weapons. It may be established within a low- or highaltitudemissile engagement zone. Also called SHORADEZ. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-52)short supply — An item is in short supply when the total <strong>of</strong> stock on h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> anticipatedreceipts during a given period are less than the total estimated dem<strong>and</strong> during thatperiod.short take<strong>of</strong>f <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing — (*) The ability <strong>of</strong> an aircraft to clear a 50-foot (15 meters)obstacle within 1,500 feet (450 meters) <strong>of</strong> commencing take<strong>of</strong>f or in l<strong>and</strong>ing, to stopwithin 1,500 feet (450 meters) after passing over a 50-foot (15 meters) obstacle. Alsocalled STOL.short take<strong>of</strong>f <strong>and</strong> vertical l<strong>and</strong>ing aircraft — (*) Fixed-wing aircraft capable <strong>of</strong> clearinga 15-meter (50-foot) obstacle within 450 meters (1,500 feet) <strong>of</strong> commencing take<strong>of</strong>frun, <strong>and</strong> capable <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing vertically. Also called STOVL. Does not include other contacts, which must be reportedby type, e.g., radar <strong>and</strong> sonar contacts.signal operating instructions — A series <strong>of</strong> orders issued for technical control <strong>and</strong>coordination <strong>of</strong> the signal communication activities <strong>of</strong> a comm<strong>and</strong>.
