Whenfully activated, the naval advanced logistic support site should consist <strong>of</strong> facilities <strong>and</strong>services provided by the host nation, augmented by support personnel located in thetheater <strong>of</strong> operations, or both. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-04)naval base — A naval base primarily for support <strong>of</strong> the forces afloat, contiguous to a port oranchorage, consisting <strong>of</strong> activities or facilities for which the Navy has operatingresponsibilities, together with interior lines <strong>of</strong> communications <strong>and</strong> the minimumsurrounding area necessary for local security. (Normally, not greater than an area <strong>of</strong> 40square miles.)naval beach group — A permanently organized naval comm<strong>and</strong> within an amphibiousforce composed <strong>of</strong> a comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> staff, a beachmaster unit, an amphibiousconstruction battalion, <strong>and</strong> assault craft units, designed to provide an administrativegroup from which required naval tactical components may be made available to theattack force comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> to the amphibious l<strong>and</strong>ing force comm<strong>and</strong>er. (<strong>JP</strong> 3-34)naval coordination <strong>and</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> shipping — Control exercised by naval authorities<strong>of</strong> movement, routing, reporting, convoy organization, <strong>and</strong> tactical diversion <strong>of</strong> alliedmerchant shipping. It does not include the employment or active protection <strong>of</strong> suchshipping. Also called NCAPS. (<strong>JP</strong> 4-01.2)naval coordination <strong>and</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> shipping <strong>of</strong>ficer — A naval <strong>of</strong>ficer appointed t<strong>of</strong>orm merchant convoys <strong>and</strong> control <strong>and</strong> coordinate the routing <strong>and</strong> movements <strong>of</strong> suchconvoys, independently sailed merchant ships, <strong>and</strong> hospital ships in <strong>and</strong> out <strong>of</strong> a port orbase.
