Chapter six - Vance Ferrell 201It is discipline of spirit, cleanness of heart and thought that is needed. This is of more value than brilliant talent, tact, or knowledge. An ordinarymind, trained to obey a "Thus saith the Lord," is better qualified for God'swork than are those who have capabilities but do not employ themrightly. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit thanby the training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will beconstrained to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words which Godgives them. Those who receive Christ as a personal Saviour will stand the test andtrial of these last days. Strengthened by unquestioning faith in Christ, even the illiterate disciple will be able to withstand the doubts andquestions that infidelity can produce, and put to blush the sophistries ofscorners. The Lord Jesus will give the disciples a tongue and wisdom that theiradversaries can neither gainsay nor resist. Those who could not, byreasoning, overcome satanic delusions will bear an affirmative testimonythat will baffle supposedly learned men. Words will come from the lips ofthe unlearned with such convincing power and wisdom that conversionswill be made to the truth. Thousands will be converted under theirtestimony. Why should the illiterate man have this power, which the learned manhas not? The illiterate one, through faith in Christ, has come into theatmosphere of pure, clear truth, while the learned man has turned awayfrom the truth. The poor man is Christ's witness. He cannot appeal tohistories or to so-called high science, but he gathers from the Word ofGod powerful evidence. The truth that he speaks under the inspiration ofthe Spirit is so pure and remarkable and carries with it a power soindisputable that his testimony cannot be gainsaid.SummationFew great men will be a part of the last work. Rather it will be those from amongthe common people, the uneducated, and even the illiterate. God will raise upthose who are taught by the Holy Spirit rather than those who are trained inliterary institutions and are self-important.ConclusionTestimonies on Sabbath-School Work, p. 65God calls upon those who hold responsible positions in Sabbath-schoolwork to put away all egotism, all self-confidence, and pride of opinion; ifa message comes that you do not understand, take pains that you mayhear the reasons the messenger may give, comparing scripture withscripture, that you may know whether or not it is sustained by the Wordof God. If you believe that the position taken have not the Word of Godfor their foundation, if the position you hold on the subject can not becontroverted, then produce your strong reasons; for your position will notbe shaken by coming in contact with error. There is no virtue ormanliness in keeping up a continual warfare in the dark, closing youreyes lest you may see, closing your ears lest you may hear, hardeningyour heart in ignorance and unbelief lest you may have to humbleyourselves and acknowledge that you have received light on some points
