AndI could not figure out why Hewould hate me. What had I done todo this? Well, that night, December9, I said good night to you (Becky),I was also saying good-bye and Iwent to sleep after many hours ofprayer.“At this juncture in Ernie’snarrative, his wife, Becky, said,‘Can you share with us what youwere praying that night?’ Erniereplied:“That night I was asking God,bluntly, to end my life. I wasasking Him just to stop it, that Idid not feel the love that I thought aperson would feel, and of courseyou can tell that it is hard for me torelate this, because this is not astory or something you’d watch onTV or some story you’d read out ofa book. This was my real life; thisis what I’ve experienced. But thatnight I went to sleep, and thenext morning I woke up. Sundaymorning I woke up and I hadjust finished having thistremendous dream!”This is utterly astonishing! Afterhaving spent a number of years inAdventist Church membership, on thevery night that Ernie’s hatred of Godreached its climax,—he received adream from a supernatural being,that he was to be a prophet to theAdvent people, and was going toreceive more dreams which he shouldshare with them! Can anyone reallybelieve that such dreams are comingfrom God?Repeatedly, in those dreams, Ernieis praised by the angel, and told thatGod loves him deeply. Yet there is noevidence that Ernie ever experienced agenuine conversion, before, during, orafter starting to have thesesupernatural dreams. A genuinerepentance is founded on heartfeltrepentance of sin, confession andforsaking it, and acceptance of theenabling grace of Christ to live a betterlife—and then to start living it.Later in the letter, Linda mentionsthat, in addition to hating God, he toldHim to kill Him that night. —He alsochallenged Him to talk to him “like Hedid the other prophets.” What anopen-door invitation for Satan tocontact him that night! This is whatLinda said:“When you went to bed on thenight of December 9, 2006, youwere discouraged, angry at God,and wanting to die. You challengedGod to prove that He loved you, bycoming down and talking to youlike He did the other prophets.”We will later learn that, even at thepresent time, Ernie expresses littleinterest in the study of either the Bibleor Spirit of Prophecy, and says Godhas other ways to communicate truthto him.Ernie says Christ appeared to him—Earlier in the letter, Linda said that itwould be expected that, although he saidthat “Christ” appeared to him that night,it could easily be Satan that wasspeaking to him.“Think about this: Since, at thepersonating of Christ, Satan will‘bear the appearance of Christ inevery particular,’ ‘His voice is softand subdued, yet full of melody. Ingentle, compassionate tones hepresents some of the samegracious, heavenly truths which theSaviour uttered; he heals thediseases of the people’ (5T 698,GC 624). We know he is going todo that.
