4 - Le retrait Plus généralement, les manifestations de sexisme condui - sent à des stratégies de défense fondées sur la mise à distance, l’éloignement, le désengagement ou le désinves - tissement professionnel des femmes 102 . L’éloignement, à plus ou moins brève échéance, de la personne ou du contexte perçus comme sexiste, le changement de service, voire même la renonciation à son emploi, permettent, aux yeux des femmes concernées, de sortir sans dommage d’une situation qui aurait pu être destructrice, du moins en termes d’estime de soi. Ainsi, le plus souvent, les femmes «bricolent » avec ellesmêmes et avec les autres leurs réponses aux manifestations de sexisme dans le monde du travail. Ces arrangements personnels montrent clairement que le sexisme n’est pas pris en compte dans les organisations de travail, carence d’autant plus dommageable qu’il a des conséquences lourdes, et à ce stade insuffisamment étudiées, sur la santé des femmes et des hommes concernés. V. LA B<strong>LE</strong>SSURE : effets sur la santé et la performance L’exposition au sexisme ordinaire n’est pas sans conséquence à la fois sur la confiance en soi et donc la performance et sur le bien-être et la santé des personnes qui en sont les cibles. L’impact du sexisme sur les performances a déjà été évoqué, rappelant en cela les résultats de l’enquête CSEP/LH2 : 93% des femmes salariées considèrent que les réflexions et attitudes sexistes peuvent modifier leur comportement au travail, 92 % pensent qu’elles ont un impact sur la confiance en soi, 92% qu’elles déstabilisent le travail de ceux qui le subissent. Enfin, 53% des femmes disent avoir été très affectées par des comportements de sexisme. Mais le sexisme a également un impact négatif sur le bienêtre car il agit comme un « stresseur », néfaste pour la santé physique et mentale (Bry, 2014). Les effets sur la santé ont été notamment mis en évidence par le centre pour le leadership éthique de Melbourne. Ce dernier a réalisé une méta-analyse 103 portant sur 103 travaux en psychologie sociale dans le monde (principalement aux Etats unis, au Canada, en Finlande, en Allemagne, en Norvège, aux Pays-Bas). Cette étude vise à comparer l'impact du sexisme plus fréquent mais moins intense (comme faire des blagues et des commentaires sexistes, ignorer les opinions des femmes au cours des réunions, suggérer que les femmes ne sont pas adaptées aux métiers à prédominance masculine) avec d'autres expériences considérées comme plus graves au travail, comme le harcèlement sexuel. Les résultats montrent que les formes de sexisme, explicite ou implicite, d’intensité plus ou moins variable, sont tout aussi nocives pour le bien-être des femmes au travail et génèrent des problèmes de santé mentale et physique et de l’insatisfaction dans leur emploi et dans leurs relations professionnelles. Quelles que soient les méthodologies utilisées, les études montrent que plus les femmes sont exposées à des événements sexistes, plus elles rapportent de hauts niveaux de détresse psychologique 104 . De plus, si les effets négatifs sont incontestables pour la cible visée par les actes sexistes, il est important d’insister sur le fait qu’être témoin/spectateur d’incidents sexistes génère également un stress particulier (bystander stress 105 ) pour les collègues ou les autres personnels de l’organisation. Une exposition indirecte semble avoir des impacts sur la santé quasiment semblables aux conséquences observées chez les femmes directement exposées. 102 - Ann M.
